BALLOON ADVENTURE.

Voyage in à Fog.

PARIS, Dec. 24,-Ballooning is beagning ao common a recreation in Paris that one may look forward to the time when the Aero Club will rival the Automobile Clu), In membership and popularity; and the sky over Paris will be as thickly dotted with airships as the Avenue des Champs-Elysées is now with motor-cars. Already it has become the practice amongst a set of the jtunewe dorće to take a balloon spin between luncheon and dinner. Au amusing ad.. venture befel two of them the other day. With nothing to do between two and eight they decided to take out their balloon. It was a grey day, and the clouds hung low, i and they shot up a few thousand feet to get above them, sailing pesoefully with a steady wind for an hour or two over the white rolling billowa. Eventually, when they thought it was time to be getting back to dinner, the valve was opened and the bal Icon decended in a field where a number of men were cutting of turnips. The bal- loonists shouted to them to hang on to the! ropes, but the men made signs that they did not understand. They shouted again, with the same reult, and at last it dawned on them that the turnip cutters were for- eigners. They had drifted over France, and dinner was at eight. They tried the men in German, in English, ond bad Italian, but with no effect. "Heavens," they thought, "where ever can we have got to "The balloon came to ground, and the aeronauts made for the nearest house, and there the mystery was explained. The men in the fiold were Flemish labourers, many of whom come to France in harvest time, and the strange country was Choisy- lo-Roi, a few milos outside Paris.

rived at was that the decline was associated with a general raising of the standard of comfort, and was an expression of the determination of the people to secure this greater com. fort. That gospel of comfort was be- coming the practical ethical standard of a rapidly increasing number of civilised communities. In its adoption the towns had preceded the rural dis tricts, but in England the latter had almost overtaken the former. The authors had no hope that any nation- in the absence of strong and over- whelming moral influences to the con- trary would be permanently left be- hind in the race to decimate the Noon-Meeting of the Kowloon Land & "race," and they anticipated, as the re-

This is a sufficiently gloomy view to take of the matter, But the theory that the gospel of comfort is primarily responsible appears to be susceptible. of proof. The lowest birth rate is in France with 21.6 per 1000, and then come: New South Wales, 26.5; Vic- toria, 27.0; Eugland and Wales, 28.7; New Zealand, 29.6; Belgium 31.0, and Saxony 31.8. The figures for America were not given but it was stated that Ireland alone shows an increase of fertility-three per cont. It will be Been at once that it is in the richer for countries, where the struggle existence for the majority is easier than elsewhere, that, the tendency is most pronounced. The cause having been ascertained the cure surely can be found. All sentimental objections to grappling with the evil in the full light of day should be thrust aside and the Imperial Government should with- out delay appoint a Commission to make all necessary investigation and bring down to Parliament proposals to arrest this terrible tendency before it becomes too serious to be overcome.

CORRESPONDENCE,

SUNDAY LABOUR;

(To the Editor of the CHINA MAIL,'} Sin-A line in the brief announcement made by you in your Friday's issue in re- ference to the new Kowloon Post Officer indicated that one condition, to be observed by the contractor who might secure the work, prohibited Sunday work. It has lately been a question with me whether the time has not arrived when the Government might exert itself to discourage, if not legialato that Sunday work should be dis continued throughout Hongkong. I am quite aware that in making this sugges tion I shall probably be met with the objection that the Chinese are a non- Christian people, and that they do not wish to identify themselves in any way with Christiani'y; that the govern ment. has no more right to legislate to compel the Chinese to observe the attend church on Christmas day. If it were certain that the entire Chinese people were opposed to a day of test, there would be force in the objection. Facts, however, seem to indicate that at present, cessation from work on the Sunday does not in any way identify those who accept the privilege with the Christian faith ; nor is it under atood in anyway to dissociate them from: the faith of their fathers. It is not general- ly known perhaps that even in a great city like Canton there are two important pro- fessions, the followers of which do not work. on the Sunday. In most cases, if not in all, no native newspapers are published on that day, even though nineteen readers out of every twenty are non-Christianu. Again. wo have been informed that, in the new schools and colleges no teaching is done on the Sunday. Moreover I think that I asw*
