his Majesty in a draught of some alcoholic- liquor has been expieded.

As long ago October, 1902, Rear Admiral King-Hall obtained an opinion from his Majesty, through Lord Knollys, that total abstainers need compromiss neither their loyalty nor their convictions when drinking his Maj sty's health.

Permission to publish the letter, which' wasnt first employed for private circulation, has now been granted by his Majesty, and bero it is :-

Dear, Captain King Hall,-

His Majesty is afraid that it would be difficult to make any public announcement that be considers his health can be as loyally drunk in water as in wine.

The King commande me, however, to say 1376 that you are authorised to make it known "privately," and in my way that you think best, and you are authorised to state that total abstainers can always drink his health in some non-alcoholic drink hia entire satisfaction..

The return of the gumlayers' teals of 1905, just published by the Admiralty, shows that the Chins Squadron- took seventh place in the twelve fleets and squadrons which competed. The best shooting ship of the fourteen in the squa- dron was the Iphigenia, which scored ■ total of 97.40, the best shot with the 6 in. gun being patty officer H. Burgess, and the best shot with the 4 in. gun, able sea- znan S. Edward. The other ships in the order of merit were Sutlej, Ocean Andromeda, Sirius, Hogue, Astrea, Diadem (now the flagship), Centurion whose alleged inaccurate sights caused ;auch comment), Glory (ox-flagship),

Albion Olio, Cadmus,

(ex-flagship), and Bonaventure, which joined the squadron from the abolished Pacific bo aid that Squadron. It cannot the squadron did well. It formerly held the pride of place in theso returns, but it has been steadily on the down grade for come time. THE FATAL PHONOGRAPH,

An Unfortunate Record.

The Daily Mirror manages to go hold

of some extraordinary stories. The follow- iag from that journal's Paris corsespan- dent would be hard to beat :-That Bometimes most imprudent to register private phonepraph records is shown to an adventure that has befallen a lady in Perle, which will lead to her husband taking di- vorce proceedings against her.

M. Partant, an insurance agent, gare a party at his house. Among those present was his friend M. Paul Carmin.

After his wife, Amelie, who is a good singer, had given a song, M. Partant brought out a phonograph and played what he thought was the record of a comic

song in the machine.

To the surprise of all, however, it was a duet that was rendered, and tho voices, wore recognised to be those of Mme. Partant and M. Camin.

The duet was interlarded with the sounds

of kissing, and with various exclamations,

such as Paul, my precious, Amelie, my own sweet one." +1

The party broke up in confusion, The husband sent for a policeman, and accom-

panied his wife and his friend to the office

of the district magistrate, whore he charged

the pair with misconduct and left the phonograph record as proof of the fact.
