to the further East, where the war un doubtedly interfered with the movement of passenger waffle. The expenditure side of the working account does not present any particular feature, except an excess charge of upwards of £32,000 under the head of repairs, which is entirely due to the reft of certain ships alluded to in an earlier part of the report. It will be noted that the result of the year's operations happily allows a further provision for depreciation to the extent of £170,000, in addition to the normal allowance of £360,040, thus raising the sinking fund for the year to the Aatisfactory figure of £536,040,

Gallant Rescues at Sea. One of the bravest rescues at sea ever performed by a British Merchant ship was that which took place some months ago, when the Booth liner "Augustino" effected the rescue of the greater part of the crew of the Greek steamer "Clementine," "Ac- cording to a communication-the state- ments in which were subsoquently fully verified-which was addressed to the Mer- ohant Service Guild by several passengore on board the "Augustine" during a heary storm off Ushant, fell in with the "Clemen- sine" flying signals of distress. The wind, at the time, was blowing with hurricane force and there was a tremenduous sca raging. Thereupon, the "Augustine" wan manoeuvred as close a safety would permit to the sinking ship and, in the face of almost insuperable difficulties, à boat was launched in charge of the Chief Oficom, Mr J. W. Harris, with a volunteer cow and This boat service put off to the rescue. was of most dangerous character-in fact, none of the passengers expected to see her return. When she got close to the sinking ship, she was compelled to keep away a smashed to poices little to avoid being against the Clementine's" sido, and the crew were appealed to jump into the sea so that they might he picked up by the rescu- ing bos'. This, however, they would not do and the boet eventually had to return Shortly afterwards the Greek ship sank. Captain Forbes, of the "Augustine," called for another volunteer crow which consisted

of the same Officer and men as previously, and with desperato efforts they succeeded in saving from amongst the wreckage four lives. The boat having returned, Captain Forbes adjusted his ship so as to drift towards others of the Greek crew who were clinging to the wreckage and fluating away to leeward. Four men were espied, but they were in far too exhausted a condition to help themselves in the way of clinging to life-lines which were thrown to them. These mon, according to the passengers would inevitably have been drowned had it not been for the gallantry of the Chief, of the Third Officers Second, and

Augustine" who themselves plunged into the water, tied lifelines round the men, who

were then hauled on board,

A BACHELOR'S REAL GRIEVANCE.

man who remarks that he cannot

ford to marry is usually, afraid of having to give up some pet luxury. But here is a genuine grievance from an English bachelor, who states:-I am 29, and would have married before now, but I have spent a small fortune upon doctors and -medicino in search of health. I am under no such disadvantage now, for Dr Williams pink pills have given me full health and

trength."

Mr R. E. Jones, of 3 Olague-street, Stuart-stroot, Manchester, explained fur, ther: Ono doctor frankly told me that I needed, blood, and that many men suffer through this. Doctors and hospitals treated me, and at last an eminent physician.

But my illness. appeared to defy the bost treatment. I began to vomit blood. Food would not digest. I became exces- sively weak, and my weight decreased rapidly from 11 st. to 8 at. My legs grew so weak and shaky that on going upstairs I used to tumble over, I could sleep only fitfully.

One day, when I could scarcely crawl, I read in a pamphlet of a man who had suffered from bloodlessness until cured by Dr Williams' pink pills. I tried them, and felt greatly relieved even after one botttle, but while taking a third bottle a great The vomiting change was manifest. stopped, my appetite began to improve, could sleep better, my legs regained their strength, I could get about, and the improvement in my general health con- tinued daily, until I was unable to resume work.

That men as well as women become anmic is an undisputed fact; in both sexes the complaint becomes aggravated by disregard of early symptoms-such as pale gums and lips, breathlessness, languor, and an increasing feeling of debility. Dr Williams' pink pills supply new, rich blood to the starved veins, and impart energy. They have cured also indigestion, palpita tions, bile, eczema and akin disorders, rheumatism, sciatica, St Vitus' dance, paralysis, locomotor ataxy, and ladies' ailments. Price 2.9d. à bottle, or 13s, 9d, for six bottles, of most dealers, or from Dr Williams' Medicine Co., Holborn viaduct, London.
