One of the bullets had made a large hole in the ceiling, the other two had had been used by the murderer in disposing of his victing and then himself. Dr von Schab was com- municated with and on arrival made an examination of the bodies, and found them both cold, death having most likely been instantaneous. The crime must have been committed early in the afternoon, says the Shanghai Mercury, and none of the boarders or servants heard anything unusual during the afternoon and the pistol shots were not remarked by anybody.

Mrs Hartwig was an old resident of Shanghai, her husband having committed suicido here some six or seven years ago. She was engaged to bo marrie

„THE CABLE CASE.

Captain's Evidence Questioned.

The case in which the China and Japan Electric and Telephone Company sued the China Manila 8. S. Co., for 81000, was resumed in the Summary Jurisdiction of

the Supreme Court this afternoon, before His Honour Mr A. G. Wise, Puiene Judge. J. Hill, Chief Engineer of the "Rubi," said that the "Rúbi" went to Manila Tho under one boiler in May. 1905. "Rubi" would steam 10 knots in smooth wator with one boiler and 123 knots with two boilers. When the ship left her buoy on August 30 he had sufficient steam to go ton knots in smooth water.

Mr Sharp cross-examined the witness` regarding the entries and alterations in the Engineer's log, with respect to orders to raiso steam on August 30, the entry being struck out. Witness did not know-

The Ball was a living and glittering demonstration that, so far as American and Great Britain are concerned, our swords have indeed been beaten into ploughshares and our spears into pruning hooks. This is the way the Evening Mail spo‹ks in a leading article of the ball on the "Drake" last night, and it expresses the general feeling here that Price Louis of Battenberg has acccomplished his mission to America, which was to emphasisse the friendship between the two countries, in a brilliantly succegaful manner.

THE ROYAL TOUR.

Doings in India,

On December 14, at Delhi, Their Royal Highnesses, the Princo and Princess of Wales, set out with their suito ona moter ex- pedition to the ruins of the Imperial capitala which lie scattered for a dozen miles round the modern city. Their first destination was the tomb of Humayun. Thence the party proceeded to the Kutb Minar, oloven miles from Delhi. After an inspection of this monument and the adjacent ruins, the party lunched at the dak bungalow close by, which had been specially prepared two weeks ago, and then sot out on their" return journoy, taking on the way Safdar Jung's tomb,

The Royal party arrived at Agra on the 16th and met with a splendid reception. The party drove to the Circuit House through tree-lined avenues, filled with At noon a reception of salaaming crowds. durbaris was held in the Circuit House, and in the afternoon the Prince and Prin cess attended a very successful garden party given by the members of the Agra Club at Sikandra, tive miles off. The drive back in the evening was a striking one, the illuminations being most brilliant,

Replying to the Agra Municipal nd- dress His Royal Highness said--- Gentle- men, on behalf of the Princess of Wales and myself, I thank you sincerely for the kind welcome which you have given to us. It is a privilago 1 anyone, whether from the West or from the Esat, to approach your beautiful and historical city. Wo look forward with keen interest to seeing its artistic and architectural beauties of which you are also justly proud, and I um quire certain that during our visit we shall gain impressions of Agra which will never fade from our minds and wo shall always remember your friendly greeting and the pains which you have taken to make our stay here pleasant and successful. look forward to associating myself with you in the unveiling on Monday of the statue which you have raised to of our late boloved memory Queen EmpresA. It is befitting that in this city, so rich in exquisite monuments of the great Einperors of the past, there should be a memorial of a ruler who yielded to none in her love and goodwill towards India. While nothing can rob yon of the noble inheritance which you possess, I notice with satisfaction that you are keeping pace with the tires so that you have a futuro asell as a past, for I learn that your, railway systom is being further de veloped and that our cotton industry is steadily increasing. Gentleman, the Prin. cess and I honestly trust that the prosperity and welfare of Agra may continue. I shall

Then ho commenced borrowing money,

His next adventure was singular.

He encountered a young woman, who, when they parted, gave her name and address as that of a fellow servant-Mias

To Miss Kirk ho wrote: I will be true to you, and I am sure you will be true to me. God bless you and keep you safe to me.'

Although this was the first intimation of West's existence to Misa Kirk, she met the man, who calmly transferred his affections to her.

He was eventually captured through his carelessness. He had represented that he I was in the employ of Edison and Swan, and Miss Kirk's master, anxious about the man making love to bis servant, inquiring there, found that the prisoner three years aga had used their name to victimise domestic servants.
