'BULLS' EAT BEAR.

New Luncheon Dishes

from Rusala

Bear meat has proved a distinct success

as a luncheon dish in London.

From one o'clock onwards the little German restaurant in Cheapside of which Mr A. F. P. Haroske is proprietor was crowded to its limit, and many curious stookbrokers, both bulle' and bears," were devouring the flesh of the Russian animal with considerable relish and no visible trepidation at áll,

The two dishes on the menu were: Bear ragout with potatoes' and 'Bear ham with Burgundy sauce...

Mr Haroske, who has had a wire from a Glasgow hotel asking if he could let them have a part of the bear, saw no reason why bear should not catch on.' You know," he said to the Daily Mirror, you English want a change. Every day it's beef and' ohops and steaks. Nothing fresh.

Poss for some months past has been chief engineer of the Egyptian Cotton Mills at Cairo. He had heard that the crossing of the Nile below the bridges was impossible for a swimmer, and he decided to try the experiment. So he. went into the river and swam from Old) Cairo to Basus, cloven and a quartor miles, accomplishing the feat in two hours. The was accompanied in a boat by Joseph do Santis, an employè of the cotton mills.

at Old Caire they had some dificulty in getting a boat, the Arabs refusing when they heard of Poss's intention of swimming down the river; but, crossing the river by the ferry, they managed to obtain a small craft, Reaching the centre of the river, Poss divested himself of his clothing and, greatly to the astonishment of the Arabs, plunged into the water. A strong wind was blowing at the time up the river, and the boat was unable to keep pace with the swimmer. But the occupants managed to koop Poss in view when he passed under

'Why an Englishman Shot a Chinaman.

Sentence of Death.

I

One of the most extraordinary crimes of recent years, had for its aequel the condemnation to death at Wellington. New Zealand, of Lioned Terry, an Englishmau.

Throughout Australasia there is among the white population keen feeling against 9 the coloured races, In-Terry's case this

hatred became almost lunao," "He publish ed several books on the subject, ut finding little attention. that they attracted apparently determined to sacrifice his own life in a last effort to awaken the Colonial and Home Governments to the perils of Asiatic immigration.

Next morning Torry, bright and oheor- ful, went to a bookseller's to inquire about the sale of his book on the yellow peril, 'The Shadow.* Being told that the sales were not large, he remarked. It will sell better to-morrow,' and walked to the police station, where he gave himself up-au-Kum

About the same hour- Yung's murderer. Lord Plunket, Governor of New Zealand, received a letter from Torry stating that 'he had decided to bring the matter of alien immigration before the public eye. and to that end had put to death a Chiua. man the previous evening.'

HOME POLITICS.

Mr Balfour on the Situation.

Mr Balfour, at Manchester, shid Home Rule was still in the forefront of Liberal policy. He hoped the Liberals would con-- tinue the Unionist foreign policy, but he did not see how a mixed administration of Big and Little Eng, andere would be able to secure continuity.'

Lionel Terry was undefended at his trial having steadfastly refused legal assistance. When asked to plead he said that he had nothing to say except that his action was right and justifiable. The Chief Justice interpreted this as a plea of 'Not guilty.

When the evidence was finished Terry read a long and carefully prepared state- ment, in which he strongly objected to his Majesty the King being placed in the position of protector of an unnaturalised race of aliens in British passessions. He strenuously protested against the sugged. tion that he was the victim of an insatie 2181 delusion, or that his intellect was impaired by sunstroke. His action, he declared, was the result of careful deliberation, and was committed as a protest against the Asiatic invasion and the mixing of races, and also to test the stability of the law re- lating to the protection of aliens.

He bore no enmity to Chinamon. On the contrary, he sincerely pitied these poor people, whose presence in New Zealand was partly the result of a vicious slave sys- tem existing in China. It was for the equal

The Chief Justice, summing up, said there was no justification and no excuse for Terry's crime,

After a brief retirement the jury return- ed a verdict of guilty, with a strong recopi mendation to mercy on the ground that the prisoner was not responsible for his actions, as he was suffering mentally from a craza caused by intense hatred towards the mixing of the British and alien races.
