King Oscar's Final Letter to The Storthing)

STOCKHOLM, Oct. 27,-King Oscar has definitely and formally declined the offer of the Norwegian throne to a prince of the house of Bernadotte, and in a letter to the President of the Storthing finally movera his connection with Norway. The letter, which is dated October 28th, is as follows:

BERI-BELL

The Cause of the Disease.

Dr Hose, who, as an official in Sarawak, has had ample opportunities for studying the disease known sy beri-beri, la now conducting a series of experiments at Cambridge, (says the Standard, November 7), with a view to obtaining conclusive ovidence in support of his theory that diet is the determining cause. This theory was advanced by him in 1901, in a published in the Medical Review, when he stated' his conviction that the principal cause of beri-beri in Borneo was the cop- sumption of mouldy rice. Subsequent inquiries have strengthened this conviction, in a paper communicated to us, Dr and, Hose says

Paper

Microscopic examination satisfied me of the existence of a minute fungold growth on rice of this description. Having, as I believed, found a possible cause for the diecase, I proceeded to make further. investigations. Thirty-nine malo Dyaks who had contracted-bori-beri during their expeditions in the jungle, where they had been living on bazaar rice, were placed in villages where none but freshly husked rice was used. Of the thirty-nine men, thirty- tho three recovered and six died. On th other_land, of one hundred and twenty Dyaks who had contracted the disease under to live similar conditions, and continued to I after their return to the conat on imported rice, forty-seven died..

Having made out what I believed to be

a prima facie case against mouldy rice, I tried the experiment of feeding three mon- keys (Alocaĉus nemestrinus) on bazaar rico, One of the monkeys exhibited no special symptoms, but the other two developed. some of the characteristic nervous symptoms of beri-beri, and in particular showed a decided lack of energy, which is one of the principal symptoms of the disease. But in none of the animals did the usual oedema

in the lower parts of the legs occur.

*My investigations were then extended

to fowls, and in thes

, these weakness, and paralytic symptoms were produced, indis tinguishable, só far as I could see, from the symptoms of beri-bori. Specimens of the subjects of these experiments

and

rice have been sent to Cambridge,

am pursuing my investigations.

and so in accord with some of Dr Wright's conclusions,

*I attach grave suspicion to the practical" ly constant presence in mouldy rice of a certain small weevil (Calandra olyzœ), al- though I am not at present prepared to explain the exact part played by this insect. The marked difference as regards resistance to damp and the attacks of moulds and of the weevil, exhibited by rice from various countries, seems to me very suggestive, Thus Rangoon rice is notorious for being quickly attacked by both foes, and Rangoon rice is now discarded both in the Kuching (Sarawak) prisons, as also by the Chinese, who employ coolies to the number of several thousands on the pepper-growing estates. I have a strong impression that the incidence of beri-beri is distinctly heavier in those tropical or sub-tropical countries which import rice than in those which supply

suficient on the spot to meet all local demands. Naturally, the opportunity for deterioration in transport is greater when rice is imported from a distance,

The preceding remarks refer principally to rice and the mould which attacks it; but I have observed apparently identical fangoid or mould-like growths upon maize, sago-flour, and even on dried fish, so that any of these articles of diot might convey the disease. In my opinion, danger from rice or other foodstuffia to be apprehended only when the fermentation bas commenced and the mould has made its appearance. These conditions aro favoured by the dampness of the atmosphere in Sarawak, Lastly, I have noticed that the weevil referred to above will attack imported English wheat flour in Borneo,"
