THE COSMOPOLITANISM OF
NEW YORK.
NEW YORK, Oct. 23,
Rioting Syrians, Armed with knives and revolvers and shrieking the battle cries of their factions, turned, the lower West Side into a theatre of war late this afternoon, and were not suppressed until after they had fought for an hour and a half, with nearly 300 policeman charging them re- peatedly. The affair is said to have been fomented by Turkish sples in the hire of the Sultan.
From 6.30 until nearly 7.80 a crowd of Syriana catinated at 3,000 fought through Liborty, Washington, West and Rector Streets, while the policomen struggled vainly to capture or bent into lusensibility the leaders of the opposing factions.
Fora time a sort of martial law prevail. ed and the police lines, strung around the disturbed district, kept away all outsidors. Only four arrests were made and only five. of the wounded wore cared for by am. bulance surgeons, but this was due to the fact that the polion arrested only the leaders
of the rioting factions while the wounded
ware carried into houses in the Syrian

It will be noticed also that Dr Pearse, whose opinion is of course of greater value in these matters than that of even His Honour, the Chief Justice, was singular- ly non-committal. While affirming that he did not think there was any danger in bringing a leper into court to give evidence, the Medical Officer ang- gested that he should not be al lowed to stand in the witness box. This suggests that Dr Pearse has a lurking idea that the disease is infec- 30, 1906. tious, indeed he stated that it is not very infectious, inferentially in- fectious to some degree.
