THE IMPERIAL CABLE QUESTION.

Mr Henniker Heaton in an interview at "Colombo recently said that the question of the imperial cable and joining Ceylon with the Cocos Islands was at prosent in the hands of the Telegraphe Committee but the Committee did not seem very anxious to push it through, although it would be brought about eventually. They still hoped that the Government would acquire all the cables,

With regard to the recent reduction in cable charges between England and India and Ceylon, Mr Heaton said it was of course a step in the right direction, but ¿id not think the people of Indis and Ceylon should be satisfied with that. The rate should at least be reduced to a shilling. Personally he thought the rate should not be more than sixpence to India and Ceylon, and a elling-to-Australia.

Seven years agoʻsaye Mrs Toll, I cond- menced to suffer from bleeding piles. I tried all the remedies I knew, but the complaint grow worse. After enduring the pain and discomfort for many months, I was at last compelled to place myself in the doctor's hands, but he did me no good.

I was taken to the Newcastle Infirmary, where I underwent an operation, and I was sent to the Whitley Convalescent Home. THE RISING DOLLAR.

Efect on Trade.

The high rate of exchange which is now ruling and which apparently does not show any signs of falling is causing a considerable amount of comment in business circles. Trade all round is dull in the Colony, duller than it has been for some length of time, and in some quarters this slackness of trade is attributed to the high sterling value of the silver dollar. Although the dollar is now worth over 2/- the prices for 'foreign' goods still remains high in most of the houses dealing thore. with, while the salary of them of our

REVIVAL OF BEALSKIN.

(FORMERLY LI Woo & Co.),

No. 1, LEE YDEN STREET (WEST). Sealskin is this season enjoying a revival of CONTRACTORS & HOUSEBUILDERS. its former unrivalled popularity, and as a result made their appearance. These imita-

tions-apart from the drawbacks already referred to are well worthy of a welcome, for they differ almost imperceptibly from the real fur, while the difference in price is very appreciablo,

Of course it cannot be maintained that electric or musquash are over quite the game as the fine Alaska seal, and those who can afford to gratify their taste for the best will never hesitate between them. Furriers aro evidently of opinion this year that to ornament scalskin with some other fur is as superfluous as to 'gild refined gold,' and so the large collars and revers are general'y composed of the dusky fur itself.

THE MOST FABHIONABLE STOLES, &C. No very great novelty has been introduo- ed into the new necklets. There are two fashionable styles, the straightscarf, which is thrown over one shoulder, and the
