ANIMAL ELECTRICITY.

+

Some electrical phenomons in the animal kingdom" wer simultaneou-ly receiving attention. Raumur (about 1714) pointed out that the electrical shad- fish was capable of imparting violent shocks. These he altributed to the

power of the animal's tail. It was afterwards Assumed that these shocke might be of an electrical nature, and this was proved experimentally by Dr John Walsh in 1772. He experi mented on the electrical shad-fish, and showed that in order to obtain the shock the fish must be tonghod on both sides at the same time. Many experiments in different directions were made to solve the problem as to the source of the electricity. the corpedo ind éléctele col, but even up to the present time much uncertainty provalls.--From El ctricity in the Service of Man.

MODES AND MATIERS FEMININE.

Abolition of the Waist.

In a new pics produced recently in Paris at Antoine's, the well-known satrens, Mme. Rolly, appeared on the stage is a new form of dress, which caused a sensation amongst | all the ladies in the audience. This dress is known as the Sheath Dress, and hang down from the neck below the knees over skirt of another colour. One effect is that it almost entirely does away with the waist, so that it is impossible to tell whather a woman is short-waisted or long waisted. The now dress, which the great Parisian dress-makere my will be all the fashion this winter, was both admired and criticised.

In the old world the war against the threatened cribolino la waging wordily. Some of the beat-know women writers are banding themselves together right royally in protest against its revival. More gund would be done, it seems to the ordinary woman, if men took action in the matter and formed a league binding themselves to hive nothing whatever to do with women who wore crinolines. This would surely bring the

he majority of would be crinoline wearers to their senses, though, at the same time, some men might probably have reason to repent of their rashness. Two crinolines, would be very welcome in n seat of the Hongkong tramcars built to carry five.

Tho 6fth annual general meeting of shareholders in the Steam Water Boat Company was held at the Company's office*, Hotel Mansions, at noon.

The secretary read the notice convening the meeting, and the Chairman sald Gentlemen, the report and accounts for the year ended August 31, having been in your hands for some days I will, with your per- mission, adopt the usual custom and take them as road. The past year has not been particularly good one as regards weight of shipping in the barbour and our business has consequently suffered to a certain extent. The hostilities between Russia and Japan, now happily at an end, have caused the absence of the Japanero flag from the waters for some time, but it in to be hoped that a general improvement in trade, and consequently in shipping, wilt be apparent next year. A change in the method of our supply of water from the Government, whilst ensuring us excellent quality, has considerably enhanced the cost to us, and as any increase in our rates is much resented by our clients we are the poorer by the change referred to We underwrite our own boats (as promium required would aske our profile very small) and taking into consideration the risk we daily run our prices for water cannot be considered other than remarkably cheap. In this connection I may mention that investigation shows that vessels water in this port about 20 por cont. cheaper than in Singapore, Shanghai, Manila and other neighbouring ports-our profits depend to a great extent on the large business done. As you are probably aware we are threatened with opposition, Hongkong is now the leading shipping port of the world, and it is to be hoped that this position will be maintained and that there may be room for two com panies doing the trade in which we are eng aged. Time will show. You may rest assured that your zianagement is fully alive -to the eitustion and it does not seem pro-

I really thought the same myself too.

I was so downhearted that I gave up me dione and medical attention. I wished I had died in battle instead of returning to slow death,

"O o day I mot a brother sergeant, who said, ' Dn't give up, old boy; just try D

Williams' Pink Pile. I know a man to whom they did a world of good.' I bought a bottle. The eff.ct was marvellous. In a wook I could feel myself getting better and stronger. I could eat again, and enjoy my food, and roon put on flesh. I began to get life into me again. Three or four more bottles of the pills entirely cured me. am now in such grand bealth that it is un necessary for me to take even an occasional pill.'

Ex-Sergeant Branwell, who is now i commercial traveller, cortainly looks us well- as he declares he is.

It is by making new blood that Dr. Williams Pink Pills effect such cures as this. Dr Williama' Medicine Co, Holborn viaduct, London, send a bottle of the genuine pilla poat free for 2a. 9d., or six for 18. 9d., but they can be had of most medicine dealers, provided caro is taken to ago that the pack go bears the full name, Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Palo People- seven words. It is well known that sub- stitutes never cure, and they should be firmly refused. Consumption decline, eczoms, tits, gout, heart disease, rheum atiam, paralyia, locomotor ataxy, St. Vitus! dance, are among the other ailments the genuine lls have cured. Ladies, who know why they need new blood oftener than men, will find these pilla a revelation.
