THE ELUSIVE SPANISH TREASURE.
LONDON, Aug. 25.
Diving operations in Tubormory Bay for the purpose of discovering lost Spanlah treasure have been discontinued for the
season.
has
The task of removing the mountain of clay. and bouldera lying inside and around the bulk of the Admiral of Florence proved to great for the appliances on board the diving ship Beamer, but Captain Burna and his divera now know the difficulties of the undertaking, and are in a position to ad- visotho syndicate who have entered uponthe search for the sunken treasure as to what will be necessary to carry the enterprise to
A successful issue. There is little doubt but that if the steam power had been trebled, and the staff of divers proportionately increased, the stern of the treasure ship would have boon reached before now, and of the strong room definitely the position ascortained.
The divers were within the fore hold of the vessel two years ago, but the stern in 18ft, deeper in the silt, and this has added Immensely to the difficulty of the operationa.
The work of exploration began on July 8th of the present year, and within a few hours of starting a number of swordblades: were found. Afterwards, at various times during the search, other discoveries were made. These included seven Spanish silver coins, dated 1686, and several cannon balls, found on the bank near, or under which the frigate is believed to lie.
Two years ago a bronze broech-loading. gun was brought up, and in 1740 a brass cinnon of exquisite workmanship was re- cavored, Pistols, huge links of chain, and pirces of eight, have also been found at various times.
