AN AFRICAN EXPLORER'S

INVESTIGATION.

LONDON, Aug. 24.

News has been received by Reutor's Agency of the progress of Major Powell Cotton, who left England last year on an expedition from the Nils to the Zambesi, which it was expected would occupy about

two years.

The explorer has had a good deal of trouble with his caravan, and news of his

movements has been delayed by the murder

of two of his native runners. In the CAN BE OBTAINED AT THE SOLE AGENTS middle of June Major Powell Ootton was in the Congo Free State, and had reached Buni Camp, on the Mahagi- Irumu road. This district, which is 'at an elevation of 8,000ft., and consists of rolling grase bille, would, the exploror claims, make an ideal white man's grazing country.' The streama and marshes are already bridged.

Later intelligence announces the arrival expedition at Irumu, where Major Powell Cotton, who had onjoyed excellent sport and had secured tivo elephants, had obtained one of the largest tuskers on record, the ivory of which weighed 3721b. At the end of Jane he was leaving for the Stanley Forest.

In one of bis letters Major Powell Cotton says: One of the Congo officials at Wadelai told me a curious story of how the natives in the vicinity dispose of the old folk when they boceme a burden. As soon as the infirmities of old age creep on them they are given a soothing draught and wrapped in a fresh antelope skin. Thas attired, they are carried by members of their family to a spot some distance from grass the village, and are abandoned in the

close to a native track. The first native passing by sees what he thinks is an ante. lope

and spears it, whereupon the victim's

family omerge from their hiding place and express horror and surprise at the unfor tunato incident."
