fate of this fair and remarkable woman, who assuredly was more sinned against than is a well- sinning, Mr Henderson, who known authority on Scottish history, and who, by the way, edited, in conjunction with the late W. E. Henley, the Centenary Burns, describes once more the subtle and attractivo personality of the unhappy Queen, and sets bør storm-tossed life against the dramatic background of her times.. Special stress in laid on Mary Queen of Scots relations with her contemporaries, and the conspiracy of circumstances which. in the end determined her unhappy and cruel fate, The book is, in short, a vindication, and, apart from its historiál interest, it contains reproductions of overy authentic portrait of Mary Stuart, besides views of places associated with her life..
Many people, politica apart, will be glad to learn that Lord Goschen has been in.. duced to expound his economic creed. The book, which is to be published immediately by Mr Edward Arnold, is entitled Essays and Addresses on Economic Questions." The earliest of these doliverances was made as far back as.1865, and the Intest in 1893, But present aspects of the fiscal controversy are not ignored, for Lord Goschen has added introductory notes and additions written in the present year. No doubt the book will throw light on that far-reaching. scheme for the reduction of the National Debt which Lord Goschon advocated in 1888, when he had ceased to be the candid friend of the Liberal party, and had nocept ed office in Lord Salisbury's second Admini. stration as Chanceller of the Exchequer.

The monetary loss to the industrial classes is appalling, and though there are no actual figures to go by, some comparative idea can be formed by the estimate, which Dr Herman Briggs, the well-known health officer of New York, calculates, costs £66,000,000 annually to the United States.
Owing to the work of the Poor Low Unions and the few Consumption Hospitals and the National Association for the Pre- vention of Consumption, in which His Majesty the King takes a deep personal interest, the death rate from tuberculosis has been redu d during the last sixty years by

Canton River. Extensive surveys were consequently made of each barrier, Taishek, Steel Pile, and Wooden Bildge in the back reach, and the Cambridge, and Whampoa in the front reach. At that time little was known about the formation of the barriers themselves or of the effect they had upon the formation of the river bed. On com- plotion of the survoy it was found that no object would be gained by the removal of the entire barriers as banks of large extent had formed below the heaps of stones, but where an opening had been left for the passage of junks the bed of the river bad been scoured away.
Captain W. F. Tyler, Coast Inspector, then decided that the best thing to be done was to widen and deepen the existing passage to such an extent as to ensure the navigation of largo vessels being executed with safety. Below us lay dense banks of clouds completely hiding the earth, but above the sky was of a translucent blue, without a cloud. The sun was so strong, even though three-quarters eclipsed, that we had to use three smoked glasses on each camera."
Then, as the wind was favourable, the aeronauts decided to cross the Channel. They sighted the earth at Shoreham and they sailed for hours over the sea. Up and down they want, once ascending to a height of 10,500 feet.
For hours they lost sight of both sea and land, and could see nothing but clouds and mist. Several times snow fell upon them, and they had no idea of where they wore.
But, after an adventurous voyage, during which they travelled 200 miles, they landed near Longrure-sur-Mer, by Caen. It waS a risky landing, for the wind was carrying
the balloon a mile before the anchors held. them at forty miles an hour, and dragged but they finally descended without'reci- ent, about eight in the evening.
