FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1905,
for the purposes of a further at- tempt no th in 1905 1 conducted a party - composed · § 25 men, 16 pony sledget, and eight dog teams and sledged to Capo Flors, there to await the relief ship,
The Journey to Cape Flora occupied 19 days, our party arriving there on 16th Máy, 1904. Our worst experienes in this trip, and one that, combined with the loss: of our ship, saddened all of us,, WAS RI outbreak of glanders among our ponies, the apread of which rendered their destruction necessary at Cape Flora, and on our arrival at that point we were compelled to kill all our faithful little ponies except two.
* From 18th May to September 10th we kept a censoless watch for the relief ship, hy which date wo had to face the fact that relief was hopeless, and that all of us would be compelled to spend a second winter in the Arotic.
All hope of relief having been given up, and all arrangements having been made for the provision of the party at Cape Flora, I prepared to return to Cape Abruzzi for the farther attempt to reach the Pole in 1905 Accompanied by Mr W, J. Petern, the seond in command, and a small sledge party, we reached Cape Abruzzi by moon. light on November 20th, 1904, having been marching from Cape Flora since September 10th.
This was a dangerous and eventful trip, for a large portion of way had to be travers ed in the darkness. A stop was mado on the way at Camp Zegler, Alger Ieland, where we left two of the party, one whose toes had been frost-bitten and the other to keep him company.
ill never be forgotten by any particularly the latter part of the journey, where the rough channel ice had:
of
to be crossed in dense darkness. Time and time again men and dogs would fall into holes and crevices in the ice or 'run up against great walls of ice, the leading men going showl without being able to see-any possible foothold.
*Early in July a party of six mon with dogs, sledges, and boats, was dispatched to Capo Dillon to keep a look out for the relief ahip, and to procure walrus, in view of its possible non-arrival. On the afternoon of Sunday, the Cape Dillon party returned

over the channel ice to Camp Ziegler and CAN BE OBTAINED AT THE SOLE AGENTS brought the good news that the relief ship had arrived off Cape Dillon,
At the time I had gone a short distance from camp ton large water hole in the ice with Beaman Myer, where we were laurich ing a canoe. A dense fug covered the landscapo-and the first intimation we had of something unusual was the notes of a barlo Bounding the recall. I hurriedly returned to camp, and found all the men with their faces wreathed in smiles.
• We now got ready for our last sledge trip, as about 2 miles of rather rotten ice had to bo traversed before we could get on board. Ou our inarch towards Cape Dillon, while crossing a lead in the ice, the fog lifted, and in the haze ahead of us we
could see a large party with two sled es, On our nose approach we found this to be Mr Ub-mp with some of the relief party.
The warmth of our greetings after being ahut off from the world for wo long years can be better imagined than described.?

In an age of ruthless demolition it is not altogether surprising to find that a sugges. tion is on foot to the effect that the Clock Tower, one of the few remaining relies of old Hongkong, ought to be cast into the sea.
We pride ourselves now upon being ed practical that ancient monuments are na. turally regarded as being mere cumbere of the pround. And yet old landmarks do undoubtedly possess their values and usée, and, as has recently been pointed cut in the local press, the Clock Tower will serve in the future as an historical index of

tion, namely the plea of obstruction to traffic. Such a plea, however, appears to be illusory upon examination into the facts. Pedder Street is a fine broad thoroughfare→ and even in the pp-called congested part, DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP COMPANY which only extends for a few yards, there is so trivial an obstruction to the traffic that the police permit rickshas coming from opposite directions to pass one another on the same side of the Clock Tower..
Another reason which is sometimes urged in favour of the Clock Tower is that the Clock at all events ought to be removed to some site from which it can readily be seen by the shipping. This reason also seems a poor one inasmuch as junks and asmpane have a sufficiently reliable guide for their purposes in the ship's bells, while the masters of ocean-going steamers, who require mathematical accuracy, naturally regulate their chronometers by
