Failure of the trust to 'inako good' mey bo necounted for in various waya, but the basic explanation is that it is not complete. It cannot get rid of competition like that
of the Cunard Line, which continues to make money. Therefore, it has not brea able to raise its rates, In fact, it his not been able to maintain them,
Fur' 6x+ ample, in 193 the gross earings were $31,037,420 and in 1904, 828,846,993, while expenses had slichty risen. Its neb earnings, as shown by the report just jesued, are $1,8 6,4 7, where is interest on bonds is $3,647,507. Not the slightest hope is extended of any interest being available for preferred stock, while, as for common stock, it is practic lly worthless In view of it all, we can now af rd to laugh at the fears once expr·ssed that American capital could buy up the British Empire, and American braina manage it. The only people who appear to have made teney are the stolid Englishmen who sold their ships.

advantage out of a boat which the elements
will allow.
Some men aro of opinion that if they got to sea in a largo vessel, grasped the tiller and salled her full and bye" they would be quite experts at the gaine, but if they start their experience in such a way they will never become yachtsmen.
It is the man who stuite his experience in the small boate, who can feel overy rib of his craft shiver, and who sympathises with her when she is pressed, as if she were a living soul, who can handle a boat with success. It is not necessary to rack your brains studying designs of the fastest machinos aflost before you start yachting, as they are sure to be must uncomfortable and expensive.
For Hongkong yachtsmen the one-design craft built last year by members of the Cor. inthian Yacht Club seems a very suitable kind of bost, they are fairly speedy and o very safe type of boat for amateurs. They could possibly be improved, by finer build and a lenghtened counter, but as they stand the racing is equal. I hope to eco a good few more added to this young fleat of the same type, as the Club deserves support from those in the Colony who cannot par- ticipate in the expensive recreation of the senter Club. Recreation from yachting is for more ceneficial to thearorage Hongkong
resident than most other sports.
