is a little smaller than tho soft wire. The whole of the length of wire is slowly pulled through this hole. The result is that the metal isqueezed into a harder and denser condition, somewhat as a road is inade hard by being rolled.
This
process is called drawing," and for tramway wires it is repeated three times. It is then called 'hard' diawn' wire and is differont to the soft wire in much the same
way that hard temporod steel is different te Boft steel. It will stand about double the pul, that soft wire will, but it will not stand the same bending and atraightening
Having now had our wire made as sound·· and strong as possible we must see that it is not in any way damaged during erection. It must be run out without being bent or kinked. The wire is supplied neatly rolled on a drum. This drum is mounted on a waggon so that it can turn round easily, or bo held tight, as required by the workmen. The ond of the wire is fastoned up, and the waggon moves on trail- ing the wire behind it. Then comes ■ tower waggon with two or three men on tep who tie it temporarily into place on the brackets or cross wirce. These should be. the most experienced men in the gang. As the wire moves slowly past them they should be on the watch and any point in the wire that appears to be out of shapo in- stantly examined.
