WIRES.

(BY H. H. PHILZIMORE A. M. I. C. F.). In England, in America and on the Con-" tinent there are some thousands of miles of bare wire hung over the centre of the streats for the purpose of supplying electric current to trams.

This system of tramway driving has been so successful, and the danger roduced to such an inconsiderable amount, that the bare wires continue to be erected even in streets where there is heavy traffic,

To attain this degree of safety the greatest care has to be exercised, firstly during the manufacture of the wire and the fittinge, secondly during the erection, and laé ly during its use.

To consider the manufacture of the wire itself. The copper used is as pure as possible. It is first made into wire rather thicker than the finished. wire.

is a little smaller than tho soft wire. The whole of the length of wire is slowly pulled through this hole. The result is that the metal isqueezed into a harder and denser condition, somewhat as a road is inade hard by being rolled.

This

process is called drawing," and for tramway wires it is repeated three times. It is then called 'hard' diawn' wire and is differont to the soft wire in much the same

way that hard temporod steel is different te Boft steel. It will stand about double the pul, that soft wire will, but it will not stand the same bending and atraightening

Having now had our wire made as sound·· and strong as possible we must see that it is not in any way damaged during erection. It must be run out without being bent or kinked. The wire is supplied neatly rolled on a drum. This drum is mounted on a waggon so that it can turn round easily, or bo held tight, as required by the workmen. The ond of the wire is fastoned up, and the waggon moves on trail- ing the wire behind it. Then comes ■ tower waggon with two or three men on tep who tie it temporarily into place on the brackets or cross wirce. These should be. the most experienced men in the gang. As the wire moves slowly past them they should be on the watch and any point in the wire that appears to be out of shapo in- stantly examined.

After the wire has been tightened up it

has to be soldered into the cars and fixed

in frogs' and crossings. The ends of the latt raro made to grip the wire without damaging it, and it is soldored into the 1174 ears in a way that has been found during years of practice to have no appreciable softening offect on it,

When the trams are running all the wires. should be examined once a week. This can be done, on any fino day, without interfering with the working of the trams. TO. 6, REDNAXELA TERRACE, with A tower waggon goes down the line stopping 1897 NO. 6, REINA KELAN

ROUMIS at every polo, and, of course, drawing out of the way when a tram comes along. There are two men on top, each of whom has a piece of dry sacking or a pair of heavy. 1-79

leather gloves. As the waggon moves along between two poles each man examínoя one of the wires, hulding it also in one hand all round with a single layer of sacking between his hand and the wire. He can thus fool any nick or kink in the wire.
