Society Victims of Blackmail.

In the cosmopolitan and energetic life of New York sensations of one sort or another are constantly filling the columns of the newspapers, be they disastrous accidents, commerci crashes, or the exposure of the schemes of sharpers. In the latter category must be placed a remarkable system of backmail which was recently brought to~ light.'

The names of some of the most prof minent society people in the United States have been brought into what appears to be a gigantic blackmailing scheme involving the well-known society weekly. An arrest was made on the 11th ult., whon Charles H. Ahle, having the appearance of a fashionable clubman, was taken into custody on the charge of

attempting to extore 8500 from Edwin M.

Post, member of the Stock Exchange and

formerly of the firm of Thomas & Post,, Stockbrokers. Able was arrested by a de tective in a room in the Stock Exchange building just after the market closed. A moment before, after a short talk, Post had handed Ahlo $500 in marked money. In the complaint which Post made he charges that Ablo had come to him and asked him to subscribe $500 for an edition-de-luxe of a book called The Smart Sot," which a mysterious institution called the Suc'ety Editors' Association is getting out. Ahle, however, had practically 4 demanded the money for the suppres sion of an article which he said Toren Topics was going to print about Post, After his arrest Able protested that he was not guilty of any wrongdoing, and produced a subscription book containing the names

LONDON, July 21.-A Times correspondent states that the real gist of the Encyclical which his Holiness Pope Pius V recently addressed to the Italian bisliops, is that it is the duty of Italiau Catholics to prepare to fight the approaching predominance of socialism by an active participation in the policical life of the nation.

It is pointed out that if the action of the Catholic Guilds and confraternities is to be efficient, it must adapt itself to Rocial needs, and employ practical means, oven the public life of the State, which would enable Catholics to co-operate for a people's welfare.

Although the participation of Catholics in legislative power, acting as Senatore and Members of the Chamber of Deputies, is already forbidden, yet the supreme good of society may demand the granting of dis; pensation: by bishops.

LONDON, August 21,› Lord Minto succeeds Lord Curzon as Viceroy of India.

Mr H. N. Ferrers (instructed by Mr C. E. H. Beavis) appeared for the com plainant and Mr H. E. Pollock, K. O. (instructed by Mr H. J. Gedge) for the defendant,

establishment, at new premises opposite to Rumjan decided to open a dressmaking the Hengkong Hotel, now known as the "Burlington", and engaged Mrs Boll as dressmaker under an agreement set out in the statement of claim. He would only call special attention to clause of this which provided that if the business did not pay it would be at the employer's option, to give three months' notice. The business was not ready to open until May 1 and everything went along satisfactorily until June I when Mrs Bell received a letter giving her threo months' notice. They said that a month was not a reasonable time for Mr Kumjsha to say whether the business would pay or not, Mrs Bell. worked very hard indeed and did her best in Mr Rumjahn's interests. The defendant alleged incompetence, in- subordination and insolence. The first ground he did not think the defondant relied on. As regards the latter allegations there was neither insubordination nor in- solence. If there were little acts on the complainant's part they did not amount to insolence or insubordination.

Mrs Bell, dressmaker, stated that she had been in Hongkong for two years and had been employed by Mesara William Powell, and while in that employ Mr Rum- jahn offered her a higher rate of salary and she resigned and entered his employment. When she went to the Burlington on May 1 there were were no goods there, no machines And no Chinese tailors. The machines came

a day or so later and she commenced business by taking orders and making up their own inaterial for customers. During the first week in May very little was done except to engage tailors, etc., and during the month although no goods, except a few little things arrived, she did the best she could working very hard at night and on Sundays, in addition to the stipulated hours. On June 1 she received a letter from Mr Rumjahn complaining that the business was not pay- RUSSIAN REFORMS. ing and dismissing her. E have received a communication from Mra L. Lowis, of Hazelhurst House, St Andrew's Rd., Cogan, ur. Ponarth, Wales, which is exceptionally interesting. Just previous to the birth of her first child Mrs Lewis became so ill with dropsy that her life was despaired of. The prematare birth of the child, however, saved her, and the dropsical swellings went down some- what. But at the second period of pregn. 562ancy the dropsy reappeared worse than over, the water threatening the patient's heart. A Specialist and Mrs Lewis's own | doctor agreed that the case was hopeless, but the second child was providently born some months before its time, and the mother's life again saved. The doctor then warned the patient that to attempt to rear children would cost her her life, but at this time Mre Lewis hoard of Doan's Backache
