DELIGHTS OF ROWING.
University Oarsmen in the Making
Eglish rowing is on its mettle this July, for three other nations are gending repre
tative crows to Henley Regatta, and America is pitting her best eight against our own best eights in the hope of carrying —for the first time-the Grand Challenge Cup noross the Atlantic. There are many misconceptions abroad concerning the grue- some training of the amateur carmen e there are still people who believe that he lives on raw beefsteak. Let me sketch the career of the man who rows in the final heat for the Grand Challenge Cup, and thus reaches (if he be in the winning. boat) the pinnacle of rowing fame,
On a Thursday or a Saturday afternoon at Hammersmith you may see many eights practising. And the rowing shorts and zephyr are an effectual disguise for the. young gentleman from behind the 'counter' of the Storos. But, speaking generally, one may, affirm that the representatives obramen at Henley come from Oxford Cambridge, oven though the lower river clubs contain many men who have never worn the undergraduate's gown. Still the two Universities sot the stroke; and in brief account of the making of the typicať Honley oarsman. it is fair to select the young men of eighteen or thereabouts who goes up to Oxford and determines that his afternoon pastime shall be the river.
It is possible that our young man may have come up as a wet-bols from Eton, and if he has rowed in the Eton crew for tho Ladies Plate at Henley, he starts with o genorous handicap when the captain of his
college boat club goes over the names of
肇
'freshers at the beginning of October.
Eton, Radley, Belford-these are chief among the fow public schools that send up * men' with a training at the car. But the charas of 'Varsity rowing is that ono may start as a novice in October, row in the college eight in May, and reach' Putney

faults are noted, enumerated, and cursed. If they are remedied he has the joy of apending his January afternoons on the river, toiling at the oar, while from tho bank a youth, a year older, tells the truth about him. I have pleasant memories of a day when it was snowing and blowing-the waves caught me in the back as wo crossed the Gut-the eight settled down, and wo jumped for it. Then we had to swim back for our oars and the boat. Whon we reached the college barge my rowing shorta | were solid blocks of ice. Three weeks before the races the crew goes into training, and emerges into splendid pro minence.

strugglo for a place in the eight, where we are on sliding scats and on a far higher place. But by this time the gruelling of the Torpids" and the imposed control is sup- posed to have had its due offect on the character. The "eight" is on its honour. It may breakfast in its own rooms, and dine at large in Hall. But the public eye is open and critical, the public nose is an fling; and the hint of tobacco smoke in a corner of a room would demand stringent inquiry. By this time the oaraman has reached the moment when the blade of the oar is a part of his own orgeanism and hò has become a portion of a machine with an eye on the, Shoulder of the man in front of him. Now and then it happens that the college eight is so successful that it enters for the Grand Challenge Cup. But the usual course of the oarsman is this: Having achieved not only that special cap, but the spocial cont of the college eight, the captain may send in his name to the president of the University Boat Club as a desirable candi- date for the I Trials. That is carly in the the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats October term. bank-for it is disastrous to watch a boat 28 or 30 days

crows are awarded their distinctive medals, and pvery member may wear the Trials cap--the white flannel cap with the crossed oars. The Trials 'man is out of the ruck. and the ordinary undergraduate doesn't at all mind being seen talking to the man who wears that cap, But you will seldom see it outsido Oxford. It is the badge of success that ended in fallure.
After much chopping and changing, thero or four of those non-possibly five-may win their way to Putney. Those are sor ious aftenons in January at Oxford,-when- -the-floede-are-out, and-éights-nre-being conched by men who have to run through a foot and a half of water. Have you ever tried it? You may run, criticise and shout for two or three hundred yards, but thero qust be a man sitting on the fence ready to take up
the job at the end No London tiro ongino has such proceedence as the
Varsity boat. If you make it 'casy all '¦ with your epithetted clumsiness in a boat- it is tou-and-sixpenco.
Our oarsman is now in the region of pub. licity, for he is at Putnoy, his dark blue cap with the crossed cars is assured. You must know that his training is exactly the same as that of the fresher struggling into the Torpids, and you will remember that his practice has mainly been under le'most horrid climatic conditions. There contains for him the one final pinnacle. He becomes a member of the Leander Club, which fifteen years ago had a small encamp. ment on Rogatta Island, and has now collected the loading oarsmen from both Universities. His ambition is to be one of that picked crew-out of all the hundreds who were tubbed' at college-that_re- presents the best amateur rowing in Eng land. That is the sort of crew we are pitt ing against-not America, but a single American rowing club.-Charles Rook, in the Chronicle.

The Chairman said-Gentlemen. The re- port and statement of accounts, having been in your hands for some days, I will, with your permission, following our usual custom, take them as read. The net profits for the half year ending 30th June 1905 amounted to $328,200.61, to which must be added the sum of $494,289,10, the amount brought forward from our last account, and after deducting Directre' and Auditors' Fees there remains for appropriation the sum of 8816,739.61, na compared with 8884,880.70 for the previous half year. Subject to your concurrence the Board propose to deal with this balance as follows:-To pay dividend for the half year of 12% or $6. per share, absorbing 8300,000, to write off from the value of the Kowloon Docks the sum of $14,407,31 and to carry forward to new account the balance $501,332.27; this we trust will meet with your approval.

Views of the Japanese Press.
The Chinese boycott of American goods, which is assuming rather seriour dimen sions, has attracted a goods deal of atten- tion in Japan. The Japanese Press regards this movement of Chinese, whatever griev ances they may have against the Ameri cans, as neither to the interests of China nor America, and urges that the situation necessitates & compromise, the latter giving a promise to accord more liberal treatment to the Chinese in America in fature that is
the case at present.
