Position at Amoy.
(From Our Correspondent.)
AMOY, July 29,
The agitu ion is still going on with regard.... to the boyantting question, though it is nasuining a much losa severo and rigorous aspect than it did at first. In the begin. ning; when men's minds were inflamed with pass on, nothing would satisfy the Chinese but an absolute forbidding of any connection whatsoever with the Amori cans. No servant was to be allowed to work for them: Cooks, boys and amahs were to incontinently love the service of their employers, no matter how long they had been with them or whatever ties of af- fection or of sentiment bound them... Saner, or at any rate more hutuano coun. mela have been allowed to prevail, and now all restrictions such as the above have been removed, and the cooks, and chair coolica, whose faces for some time have worn- a worried look, are once more covered with oxpansivo smiles at the thought they may not be able to get the United States Gov- eramont to modify their laws they can at least avengo
the wrongs of their kingfolk across the sea by a careful and, what might be called, a sleight of hand extraction of the dollar from the pockets of the Aniericans out here. It has been decided by the leaders of the movement that the boycott shall be strictly confined to trade lines,

I was talking over this matter with a good-natured, jully-looking Chinaman the other day. His face was suffused with smiles and he looked the very impersonation of good nature.
What would you do with anyone that refused to discontinue the use of 'Comet'?' I asked him.
A shadow fell across his beaming face and look crept into it that showed how a tiger could be crouching behind the sunniest of faces. I would treat him as a wild beast,' be said, (and I saw in fancy the burner of 'Comot' hounded through the street, and * men with weapons in their hands and pas sin in their hearts and with murder in their eyes, chasing him for his very life); 'but why concorn ourselves about him!

The question of the extension of the scope of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance continues to 'be much discussed in Japaneso political; circles, says the Kobe Herald. considerations.
1.It is extremely doubtful if Russin will abandon her national policy, which she his adhered to since the time of Peter the Great, of expanding towards the Far East and the South. It is consequently mostí probable that she will continue to be a dis- turbor of the peace, the East and else. whero, She will be anxious to obtain her rovengo on Japan and she will also persovere in her plans of penetrating to the South. Therefore, it is necessary that proper pre- cautions should be taken alike in the Far East and in the other regions menaced by Russian ambitions.
2.-As Jupau and Great Britain are equally interested in the trade of China, it is fitting that they should jointly oppose the Russo-French-Germán
lesiro to partition the Chinese Empire among the Powers, a schomio which is sure to gain strength in the future.
3. It is most desirable that, in addition to protecting the intorests of Japan and Great Britain in Corga and Ching, the —Alliance should also provide for co-operation in India, thus barring Russia's road to the Youth.
The Saiyukai has not yet deuinitely decided upon the policy to be adopted by the Party in this matter, but several of the loading meinbors have expressed them. selves to the following effect:

On Sunday evening last Europeans might have noticed that respectable Chinese houses were decorated with many lanterns, which indicated that something unusual was on foot. They might also have seen large octagonal receptacles, made of bamboo and covered with tissue paper. Further, on the verandahs of the better class houses, there were exposed paper boxes, within which were inimic hessmen and other fig. ures, which by means of a simple machinery, followed each other like a round-about at a fair at home.
The lanterns indicated it was a festival.
