The Islands' Products.

To the average American the Philippine. Islands are in the nature of an undiscovered country. There are things growing there of which the people of the country have little or no knowledge, millioner of our citj. zons will probably live and die in profound ignorance of the wealth contained in our now possessions

Things" may be somewhat different after thu return of Secretary of War Taft and his party from their summer jaunt to the orlent. It is the Sroretary's one great wish to make the Philippines known to the people of the United States, and it is his firm be Ilef that when we know what the islande possess we will have some sort of an appre ciation of them,

A vast amount of work has been doner through the insular bureau of the war de- partment in the dissemination of know- ledge regarding the Philippines, and in this connection the part played by bureaus of other departments of the government at Washington should not be overlooked or forgotten. The agricultural depart- 1378 mont bas been foremost in this, and has Jabored unceasingly. Information sent out by this branch has been of the mont valuablo sort, The results of the investi gations mado by exports in--mineralogy, ohomistry and botany, and the work of the forestry buronu, as well, have also been of benefit and productive of good.

idea that he will add still further to his stock of knowledge. When he returne he will be in possession of new facts and figures which will not fail to make their proper impression upon congress.

In the fight, which is to be renewed with fresh

energy, for the abolition, or at least the reduction of triff duties upon the pro- ducts of the Philippines coming into United States, the producers of the islands and their friende, have high hopes of at least partial success. It is believed that the members of both houses of congruas will see things in a different light, and logis- late for the benefit of the islands in such a way as will add greatly to their prosperity and induce mon of capital to furnish funds for enterprises that are now languishing for Jack uf aid. However,. until further facts and figures are given out, in addition to thoso already at hand, men of money will not feel encouraged to send their cash 80 far away from home. But when they are 1.7 convinced that investmonts out there aro secure and that any right they ny obtain will be protected, it is believed that millions of dollars will find their way there from the United States.

The capitalists of England have not been niggardly in investing in the colonial possessions of Great Britain, one roLson being that they have been given every en- couragement to put their money there. It will be the same with the moneyed mer of the United States when they are convinced things to be consideret, in this connecting, that it is worth their while. Among other

is the matter of selling their products after they have been materialized.

As the United States is naturally one of the great markets, even if it is not the greatest, it is reasonable that this country- should place itself in a condition to receive these aforesaid products. As long as the tariff is in the way little or nothing can be done. It is known that the secretary of war is one of the best, if not the friend the Philippines have, and therefore what he will have to say when he returns will be of more than passing interest.

The qualities that make it particularly valuable for those purposes are itsstrength, pilability and its ability to resist the de- teriorating influences of the weather. It retains ite strength for a long period after being exposed to sun and rain, while most other fibers, used as substitutes, will scarce. ly hold the sheaf togother long enough to reach the thresher The fiber of the the sisal honip of Yucatan, and of istle from the platosus of Mexico is strong and resists the weather well but is harsh and wanting in the pliability that is characteristic of Manila hemp.

This liber is the product of a wild species, of the plantain or banana plant, very similar to those which bear edibl, fruit, and is found quite generally distributed throughout the archipelago, being produced

THE MUTUAL STORES,

Marinduque, Negros, Panny and Mindanao, BOUBLY The province of Albay, in the island of Luzon, is especially dedicated to this indus try. The plant, though requiring a con- siderable amount of moisture, will not thrive on swampy land, its favorite habitat boing well watered slopes where the drain ago is good, and like coffee, should Lo pro- tected from the direct rays of the sun while growing. Richness of soil dons seem to be essential to its proper development, as it is sometimos found growing on the slopes of "volcanic formations that liave not yet been sufficiently disintegrated to make good deep soil. The slope of the beautiful Mayon volcano is the very centor of the hemp pro ducing district of Albay..

The value of the plant lies in its leaves, the petioles or leaf stalks which contain the long, white fibers for which it is so widely -cultivated. The are many varieties of the plant, in somo places as inany as fourteen being recognized, which differ as to varia- tions in the color, shape, the number of shoots that spring from the roots, as well as the strength and development of the fiber. In Albay experts distinguish vario. tics by the size of the stalk, the shape and size of the Inf and especially by the strength of the fiber. No systematic and onlightened effort has over been made to devolop by cultivation the desirable qualities of the plant, as has been dono with oranges, c fice, and many other dogir- ablo growthe.

It is a fact worthy of note that hemp has not been cultivated in other countries where similar climatic conditions obtain. It is thought by those who have given some" attention to the subject that the failure to transport the industry to other countries oager to share in the gains derived from. this rich product, is owing, not-so-much to -the non-adaptability of the plant-for it has been grown successfully in the botanical garden a Saigon, in Cochin China and also in British India-us to the fact that the successful treatment of the fiber is peculiar to the natives of the Philippines, an art acquired through long years of practice.

There are few crops less exposed to accid. ent than hemp. Dry weather may parch the growing plants, but with the rainy season as régular as the tides, this risk is small indeed, The dense protecting forest growth shields the plants from hurricanes, while the highlands on which it grows dro safe from inundation. Fire can make no head- away mong the great groen leaves and moist

stems. Locusts, which sometimes devas tate other Philippino crops, will not touch the plant, and beetles and other insects harm it but little.-New York Cominercial.

MOTHER

INDIGESTION * SEIGEL'S SYRUP, AFTER THREE YEARS OF SUFFERING.

No man' or..women living in Stellenbosch or Queenstown, Cape Colony, and who is afflicted with indigestion in any form, should suffer any longer if they will read the following lettors of Mr Bernard John Bergstedt and Mrs Ann Fechter and act upon the information and advice which these foltera contain. The advice is to buy and use Mother Seigel's Syrup!

Mr Bergstedt and Mrs Fachter are both young people, but each bad endured three years of wretchedness from the unfortunate condition an

of their stomachs before they found the remedy that finally relieved and cared them. It

old saying, "What is one man's meat is another man's poision," and so ordinarily it in with medicines. But M8ther Seigel's Syrup has seored hundreds of thousands of cures of in- digestion in all of the many forms it assumică and with all the varieties of symptom. Jost look over these two letters and you will p reoivo different symptoms arerentioned by the writers, but the complaints gave way before the curative power of this sovereign remedy, after othor medicines and even medical attendance had failed.

Mr Borgstedt lives at Railway Station, Stellenbosch, and is a Colonial, born in Capo Town. He is now a goods foreman in the servico of the Cape Government Railway. In his letter, dated Dicember 23, 190-f, he says:— three years I suffered all the For over torments of acute indigestion. My appetite was very poor, and after meals I had severe pains and a weighty feeling on my chest. I got little aloop at nights; I would wake up, my feef feel. ing quite clammy, and during the day could not kave proper zest. At intervals I had a feeling as though the blood had left every part of my After these body and rushed to my head, flushes I always felt weak and depressed." I obtained medical advice, but the medicine I took might as well have been thrown away.

A friend of mine asked me if I had used Mother Seigel's Syrup. I remembered, at once, seeing on our station platforms a plate reading: 'Mother Seigel's Syrup Cures Indigestion, and I immediately decided to give it a trial, I bought a bottle of the Syrup at Jooring's Chemist Shop, and I am pleased to say, after finishing the first bottle I felt relieved and decided it would enre me, and my decision was correct, as I stand by Mother Stigel's Syrup for indigestion, as mine. was very severe, and I will always speak well of Bit.".

Mry Fechter lives in Komani Square, next to Supt. Native Location, Queenstown 0.0, and her letter is dated January 13th, 1905, She is analiye of Alice, 0). O., and was born on her father, kown as Poppiejan Kloof.

* B three years," she writes, I suffered fram setare pains under my heart, caused by the prose of wind in my stomach and intes Lines.es use pains always attacked me after mesls, and distressing headaches always came with them. My bowels were never in real good order, having at all times to resort to purgatives. - I could relain nothing in my stomach, and be. came worso day after day. My condition became so serious that it was necessary to obtain medical advice, but I derived no actual bonoft from the medicines prescribed forme "

I heard of Mother Seigel's Syrup whilst aring in Cookhouse, and there commenced ating the Syrup with splendid results. After laking four bottles and using two plosters 'I- regained my old strength and good health, and it was due only to Mother, Haigal' Syrup... have recommended it to several of my friends."

A more than ordinarily amusing logal discussion took place in the King's Bonch Division of the High Court of Justice, Dub lin, recently before the Lord Chief Justice

(Lord O'Brien), Mr Justice Andrews, and Mr Justice Gibson. The case was an appeal from a decision by the magistrates at, Dun, fanaghy, county Donegal, convicting a carter, ono Niall MaoGiolla Brighida, known to those who speak English as Neil McBride, of not having his name and resi dence painted in legible letters on his cart, which he used for the conveyance of goods on the public road, as required by statute, &c. newspapers, is apparently one of the peculiar people known as Pan-Colts. Lord O'Brien described a Pan-Celt as 'one whoj advocates that everything should be in Irish instead of English.'

The main object of this little clique is to promote the revival of the Irish (Gaelic) language and literature. Mr Yeats, for instance, "writes Irish dramas, while Mr M' Bride paints his name and address in Irish on his cart. The question before the Court was whether, in so doing, the defendant complied with the act. Mr Walsh conten- ded that the words, legible letters,' should be taken to mean opposed to letters obliterated or defaced.' The Irish words

on the cart were legible to anyone who knew Trish, and it was stated that there are 640,000 persons in Ireland who speak that language, and 12,000 in the Union of Dunfanaghy, 2,000 of whom know no other tongue.

The discussion wandered off into the question whether a name painted in Turkish or Chinese would be a breach of the statute. Lord O'Brien evidently enjoyed the afgument, and remarked that it was a very interesting case. He asked Mr Walsh if ho could read Irish himself. Counsel anKWONG FOOK CHEONG swored cautiously, "A little, my lord,"-a reply that provoked laughter in the court, Mr Walsh stated that the Irish characters are not distinct character, but are the English letters that were used by the Saxons in the time of Alfred the Grest. Mr Atkinson, who appeared for the Crown, maintained that the meaning of the act was. that the name and address should be in English, and that if they were in any other language the law was not obeyed. The Court reserved judgment.

Women know why they and their daughters need new blood more than men ; but men can bo angemio, too. The week back, easy fatigue, ack of interest in life, Indigestion, and general norvous weakness which trouble both men and women, need new blood to cure them, and these pillen make now blood. Nervos that need now blood to feed them show their need in neuralgia, fits, St. Vitus' dance, eventually paralysis, locomotor atazy, and utter break- down. But Dr Williams' pick pills for pale people can cure all these things-the gonufus pilla. It is important to avoid substitutes, and purchasers should take care to see the full name, as above, on the wrapper, before paying. Sold by most dealers, or sent direct by Dr. William's medicine Co., Holborn-viaduct, London, post free for two and ninepence a bottle or six-bottles for thirteen and nine.

The Mother and Sister of Miss Quino confirmed all that she had said, and the reporter describes her as a perfect type of the bright, Twenty-year-old English Girl
