commercial spirit reigns supremo, the who substitutes some other flower, no matter how beautiful, lays himself opon the charges of poverty or penuriousness, The beloved knows to a cont how much the flowers cost, and judges his affection ac- cordingly.

The modern florist, who doesn't under- stand the language of flowers, on being told that, in the old days, when it flouri shed, the viclet signifled modesty, remarked that he thought the times had changed, and that the violet now meant money. So that the modern language of flowers would run something like this:

Violets are still the most popular of fashionable blossoms, and in this bunch five dollars' worth of my love is expressed.'

Or, if a cluster of rare orchids is sent, it means I wish you to understand that T have more money than I know what to do with, and don't care who sees it,'

The box of loose gardenias signifies : 'I am a man of fashion, and I paid a protły... price for these latest and most elegant flowers.'..

Of course there are still men who have original and poetic idens to floral gifts, but unless they are quite sure that the fair recipient of their favors-has-pootic ideas also, they will find their labor a wasted effor. Other flowers do well enough for the vases,

but to be worn where aven, the practical modern lover is still romantic

enough to hope to see his flowers on the bosom of his sweetheart, they must ba violets, orchids, or gardenias, now and for TWO-STORIED GODOWN in Cross ever-or until the fashion changes. A Lance Wanchai, from August 1st. 890 per month inclusive.

In the old days cost did not weigh. „The point for the young man was to exp what he felt, and for his lady love to under- stand and answer if she could.

If he wished to begin cautiously he combined cornflower, cyclamon, and ivy, which meant: 'It would make me very happy to have your friendship, but I am diflident. If she was willing she saw to it that a bit of sage fall in his path, which meant: Bestcom you,' or, if she wished to test him, she toyed with a spike of larks. pur, by which he was to understand that she had heard that he was fickle,

When his mind was made up, he sent her a fearful and wonderful creation made-up · of a full-blown rose, a white lily, myrtle, columbine, and forget-me-nots, which Your which being interpreted said: beauty and purity have won my love. 1 am determined to win you, and shall be for over constant."-

She might answer him in a number of ways. She could indicato royly by a white rosebud that her heart was as yet un acquainted with love, or by rosemary that she wished him to hold her in remem- brance, or by a sprig of pine that he was too bold, or by a striped pinka flat refusal.

If his sweetheart proved a flirt, the youth concocted a flaming yellow reproach for her of marigolds, yellow lilies, and some bits of THE ANGLO-AMERICAN STORE hettle and hemlock. This said: • You 386 are a cruel coquette, and you will make me Hongkong, June-21, 1905.

The invention is styled the Isometrope Leus,' and it offers many advantages over the optical glass now in use. It is without the greenish tint which the ordinary optical glass shows; and one can see more clearly through it. Again, the isometrope glass can be wade much thinner than the opties glass, with the result that the focus is more spread a considerable advantage to the -eye. Further, the infurious violet rays are entirely cut off from the eyes by the isomotrope lens, though not by the ordin pry glass now in uso.
