True, no suoner was sho placed in her new glasshouse than she sat to work and spun until the jar was nearly filled with meshwork and tiny platforms, until the whole resembled a globo full of tangled threads of the slenderest silk. But, as far as I could judge, she had no preconcerted scheme of architecture in view. Each month I have destroyed her structure for the
purpose of removing tho carcises of her weeks' 'diet, and at ench occasion shu has raised auother edifice quite unlike the previous ones, and es free from apparent design as a child's pencilled scrib.

WORLD WONDER.
The Torrible Victoria Falls,
The Zambosi Valley, for a hundred milea or more in every direction from the cata racts, is a rough and broken plateau, cover◄ ed with low brush and stunted trees, with here and there an outcrop of sombre basal- tic rock, all thoroughly uninteresting. The herbage is but faintly green, and the tropi cal sky only faintly blue. It is a lizy, half-tone landscape wanting in clear-cut Macs in overy direction, and lacking above everything else that clement we unoons. olously seek in a nature picture-life. The absence of this produces in the mind à feeling of loneliness and often of fear.
Across this solemn scone appears a river | that in flood time is perhaps half a mile wide. If a deaf man were following down one of its banks he would notice little but the quiet water and the odd-looking column of smoke shead. As this column was np. proached he would expect to see the river bank bending and the water flowing away to one side of the conflagration, and might. glance to the right and left to note the direction taken, But the panorama changea as he pazes. The river is no mure. And there, where it should by, is only the brown plain, as lonely, brush covered and monotonous as ever. One must go twenty miles further before the vanished water and the surface of the land again commingle, before it will be possible to walk along the

den and startling is the transformation.
And
Meanwhile the pillar of smoke has resolved itself into a dense mist forced up. ward in terrifio puffs from a yawning gash stretched directly across the bed of the river. This fearful abyss is every second swallowing thousands of tons of green-and- white water and belching up blaste of mist that rise hundreds of feet into the air and hurry away with the winds as if rejoicing at their escape from the inferno below. somewhere, nearly four hundred feet below, the ontapped river is fighting ita way between slicer wails of block rocks towards a narrow cleft in the eastern wall, whenco it escapes, foaming and boiling, through the gzage and curves of a deep gorgo lending off to the eastward. One goes to an edge of this delivering chasm and looks down upon the tossing waters, over pressed from bo- hind by other floods struggling out of the narrow black gateway, and perhaps the most prominent metal 1 ensation is that of thankfulness that even in such a grim and ghastly way nature has provided a means by which the fearful slit of a throat above that has swallowed the stream can disgorgo it again without causing an overwhelming catastrophe.
1
The Victoria cataract should be visited at least twice before one is competent to pass an opinion upon it. When the river is in flood (July) the scene is simply terrible, Ono sees nothing but an enormous sheet of water disappearing into the bowels of the barth, with a noise as of mountains falling upon one another, while from the awful gash comes back in fierce guats and swirls the foaring breath of the tortured olemiont bolow. But in December, when the water is low, the edge of the cataract shows as a long creamy filmy of lovely lace; the rising mist flown softly away through the little rain forest below the cavern's lip; the gigantic vault itself becomes a wonderful spectacle, a dream of neutral tints, a cave of beauty, Far down in its dark depths the waters, gliding along the rocký walls,

WATER POLO COMPETITION.
The First Match.
The first match in the Hongkong Water Polo Competition was played yesterday at Kowloon between the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club and 'B' team, V. R. O. The teams were:-
•
Yacht Club: F. E. Biden, E. W. Care. penter, W. D. Kochlor, Ortlepp, Murmy, C. H. Soper, and Vickers.
'B' team: N. H. Alres, C. Humphreys,

The Yacht Club nien took the ball up field but Alvep, near his own goal, got the bill away from his man. He swam the full length of the bath, and when in an excel- tent position ho shot, heating Biden, and the first goal went to the credit of the V. R. C. team. It was not long before the Yacht Ulab equalised, through the agoncy of Ortlepp, who was playing contre-forward, Ortlopp had been working hard and doserv-" ed his success.
Until half-time, the game was fairly even, both sides playing well. On one or two occasions there was what appeared to be foul ducking, and the referee promptly awarded free throws, The foul play, however, did not seem to be intentional. After the spell Henderson had several shots at goal, one of which went in, but 88 it Wer thrown from more than balf way it was not allowed. He scored, however, a fow minutes later, by a splendid shot, which Biden had no chance of saving. Shortly afterwards the same player was awarded a free throw. in its flight it was disallowed. The V. R. O. toam were playing the better game now and repeatedly attacked. In a molee in front of the goal Souza scored for the V. R. U., making the total thires goals to one. This was not improved on and so the game ended.
For the first match of the season the game was a good one, being well contested, The showing made by the Yacht Club must be considered credit- able in the extreme, taking into considera- tion the fact that they are practically all new to the game, here at least. Ortlepp is a good contre-forward and Soper backed him up well, albeit ho is somewhat weak in throwing.. Vickers made several mis- takes in passing too soon, which robbed his side of opportunities. Bidon in goal was very good, saving some hard throws,"
The V.R.. U. team, despite the fact that - they were playing with two reserves, passed well and shot excellently. They had a certain amount of combination, which, however, can be improved upon. It is members of the team played very well, gratifying to note that some of the junior indeed, especially Souza, who took part in his first match yesterday. O. Hus phreys, pick of the team. R.
