[FROM HOME PAPERS.]
There is again a crop of revelation and discussion just now over the private affairs of the artis s and men of letters of the nineteenth centu y The Lutters... of Wagner and Mathilde Woendonck' have roused immense attention in Germany, and have ruu through some twenty editions in little more than a year. But, this is, doubtless, because the letters really do throw great light on "Wagner's methods of work, and on the conscious development of his "dramatic philosophy. The romance" revealed is not specially interesting, and we may hope that it will not lead to one of those embittered controversies which aro apt to rage posthumously round the domestic life of men of genius,
A much less edifying love affair is that 'Romance of Victor Hugo and Juliette Drouot which has been re-told by Mr Henry Wellington Wack (Putnam's); who la a real American literary gentleman, not a minor character in one of Dickens's novels. Mr Wellington Wack applied to M. François Coppés to write an 1376
introduction to his book, and the poet, be- ing too good-natured to refuse, discharged' tho commission, with Gallie taste and taot. Not caring to say much about the unpleasant family and domestic history of Victor Hugo, he prefers to tell some stories about the M stor as ho know
ow him during the Siege of Paris, and towards the closing years of his life. Dom Pedro, the learned and literary Emperor of Brazil, when In Paris, desired to seo Viator Hugo. 'I do. not visit Emperors, replied the great" Republican. The Emperor asked if he might visit one who had the advantage of him in ago and genius. Victor Vugo graci-

It seem strange that in France, the country of literary monuments, non emorial has yet been raised to that remarkable writer, Henri Beyle, better known s Stendhal, the author of La hartreuse de Parme and Le Rouge et le Neir,' roman- car, essayist, art critic, an Lautobiographer. No. 51, DES VEUX ROAD CENTRAL. Bronte,' said Lord Rosobory, went from publisher, to publisher, and in the same wrapper to each,' Young authors are ad. vised to use a Dow wrapper in submitting thoir work to a fresh publisher. But they can do botter than that. They can have their manuscript ype written, and get as many copies as they please at a compa: ratively trifling expenso. Jano Egre might have had easier luck if it had been "typod."
But is Lord Rosebery right in thinking Titerature, regarded from the commercial point of view, saw its best days in the ear- lier years of the nineteenth century! Magnificent prices were then sometimes given by publishers for works by authors with woll-known names. There was Moore's Lalla Rookh,' for which, 'in advance of publication, £3 00 was paid, a price, snya Lord Rosebery, perhaps equal to £8:00 to day. Fancy tha! Imagino any one of our living publishers agreeing to pay £800 for a poem which he had not even seen. Those were the balcyon days of the poets, when pooms were published in quarto volumes at a guinea or so, and thero were no circulating libraries. Pootry is 'off' now, and if Moore were alive he would scarcely anke a living out of his vorses. But that is not so much because. the publishers are less liberal as because the public does not read poetry, and pro- fors plays and no ela. And tak ng the gains of the dramatist and fictionist all round, one may doubt whether the avo ngo receipts of the working man of letters wore higher three-quarters of a century ago than they are to day. A very few mado fortunes. But the majority of respectable, wull-established writers probably had a much harder stru glo to earn a decent com. potence than the rank and file of our pro- fessional authors to-day.

There is an addition to Browning litora- ture in the summer number of Country Life, which prints an unpublished early 18T-CLABS... piece by the post. It consists of fifty-two verses, under the title 'A Forest Thought,' bearing date November 4, 1837, and the first fourteen lines are printed in a facsimile of Browning's own manuscript. The editor gives an interesting account of the manner in which the poom was written. Browning had n'tended a christening ceremony with somo friends at a country church. When he came from the church to the house he left the party, and, after a brief absence, returned with the whole poem completed, and all written out fairly, without correc tions or erasures. So it seems that Brown- ing could emetimes write not only with simplicity (though we knew that from
but also with ease.

Collieries have not taken sufficiently into 37, DES VOUX ROAD CENTRAL. Every Comfort and Convenience for Resi- consideration the fact that, now that
steamers have for somo years practically supplanted sailers in nearly all trades, the .consumption of steam coals cannot increase in the same ratio as it did twenty or so years ago. Even if there are more steamers than ever, there are more coals all over the world, and the depot business is not so im. portant in proportion as it was before steamers bunkered so heavily on the out- ward voyage. Coal is plentiful in every district. It is hard to say if prices will fall, and to what extent. The required domand does not exist at the moment. The cost of working is meanwhile increasing. Gas conle aro quietor. Chartering has been more aotive in the North than in South Wales.
With a firmer tendency in coal freights, shippora who have sold on a lower basis than that ruling are holding off all they can, and hoping perhaps, thereby to pull down coal prices. These are nominal, and buyers can learn the actual figures by in- quiry.--Fairplay.

"I used to suffer terribly from nervousness and indigestion and became very thin, weak and wasted. My appetite failed and the little food I ate caused me much pain and a tightness across the chest," My nerves were so weak that the least sound made me tremble. I also had acute headache from what proved to be an abscess.
"I began taking Mother Seigel's Syrup and very soon felt like a new being.
I gained strength, and continuing with the Syrup soon became quite well. My husband also suffered in much the same way and the Syrup cured him as well.
