THE CZÁR"
Mr Perceval Gibbons' Impression,
Mr l'orcaval Gibbon sands from St. Pe- tersburg some vivid impressions of the Czar to the May number of the Pall Mall Magazine,
It was but the briefest glance (he anys), w more peg on which to hang a first impres sion, but it told on me with an effect of dismay.
---- Framed and overshadowed in the black- hood of his carriage, I saw, bolt upright and motionlese, a little figure Immaculately nest, with a face of dead pallor. Fair hair and a beard duly dressed to a point failed to withdraw from it a quality of follish- now; an utter vacancy, the emptiness of soul-weariness and futility, governed | it altogether," Agsinstita dark background it stood forth as blank and, white as paper,
| a thing awful in its corpse-like imparsivity,
yos pitlable, sorrow-stirring, and sad sa a child in pain.
The hands, I think, were crossed loosely on the knees, and I know that the ayes- stared unwinkingly in front. It was a |●ffigy, of, wearinosa that the Cuirassiors 1376 guarded, body shrining a soul worn and | distressed, a visible and warning token of
the dread that stalks through Russia,

THE VALUE OF CHINESE, .
The North Borneo Herald writes as fol. lows:-By every steamer from Hongkong, Chinese arỳ dribbling into the country in small" numbers, bringing their wives and families. On arrival they find friends and clansmen with whom they can live until they are able to strike out for themselves, and a few months finds them under their -own little roof, tilling their few square yards of gardon, and having already acquirad their full complement of pigs, fowls, -and pariah-doge. Smallar batches will be brought in at a time, everything will be ready for them on their arrival, competent Officers will be able to give them individual atten- tion, and special pains will be taken to get the right class of immigrant. One man with his wife and family of two or three small children are of as much, benefit to the country as an equal number of young unmarried men, Tho former lone nq time in making a home for themselves, their sons grow up and marry either women of their own rase, or as frequently Dusuns, and a few acres of wasto Innd are brought under cultivation. The par agraph concludad *If this is true Sandow will need to look to his laurels, thereby implying that this feat is a greater one than any over performed by Mr Sandow. A QUESTION OF PARTNERSHIP.
Ro Tong Loo, plaintiff, and Li Fung, Li’ Kum Li Seung, Lia Chau, partners of the Tak Heung, and the Tak Beung de fondants, and in the matter of the issue between the said Tong Loc, plaintiff, and Li Fung and Li Seung, defendants."
Mr H. N. Ferrers (instructed by Mr R. A. Harding) appeared for the plaintif, while Mr H. E. Pollook, K. C., (instructed by Mr Otte Kong Sing) represented the dofondants.
Mr Ferrers explained that the issue to bo tried was whether Li Fung__and Li Seung were partners in the Tak Hoang or not. The plaintiff had obtained judgment ́ against the above named defendants and, now, two of them proteated that they were not partners. The principal duty of the judge would be to give a decision upon fact, not so much as law. The Tak Houng was a family concern, a refreshment saloon in Yaumati, where business had been car red on for some years. The partner Li Chau was the uncle of Li Fung. 1933, he went home and he engaged plaintiff in England as chef. At an inter- view with plaintiff witness explained oxactly what was required, They did not want a cook, but they wanted an expor- fenced chef to keep the Chinese up to the mark and improve things. Witness told him he would be under the direct control of the manager and that so long as he performed his duties to the satisfaction of the directors he would be left alone, if not he would be told about it and if the dissatis faction-continued he would be dismissed. Witness made special mention of plaintif having to perform his duties to the satisfac- tion of the directors and he (witness) thought Plaintiff fully understood the condition. When witness returned to Hongkong in March 1974, he found his co-directors were dissatisfied with the chef. As a result of that expressed dissatisfaction witness madu investigations and with the exception of a few new sauces ho found there were no improvements. In winter last year witness watched the progress of affairs and his dissatisfaction continued.

Wildly lashing the water, it turned to dive to the bottom and to break the rattan-line.
