It was only a few days since he had left England, and my heart was still soro with the parting from my Northern home, and the broad Northcountry words falling so unexpectedly on my car went through mo liko a knife.

The speaker, was a fine old man--a Cum- berland farmer, I said to myself, and I' found later that I was not mistaken-over six feet tall, with broad square shoulders. and an open honest face.

I found the rest of that meal terribly tedious, I was in such a hurry to go up on deck and make the acquaintence of my fellow Northerner. The stewards, with a | look of relief, were hurrying about, clearing away plates and dishes, eager to secure any dainty morsel left over for their own meal, which must be oaten standing and with all speed.

There was a general rush from the saloon to the cool decks above, and I quickly found my way to a quiet corner, where the tall figure of the old farmer was dis-. cerniblo, silhouetted against the evening. sky.

I plunged at once into converantion.

My eyes began to feel a little misty; the quaint, simple words of the old man brought such a vivid picture before my eyes, so different from the long stretches of dark water touched now with ridges of golden red glory.

We talked long that night, for he came from a village quite near my own home, and know Carlisle and the Eden and the district around as well as I myself.

suffered greatly from liver disorder with dizziness, poor appetite and was unable to sleep at night. My bowels were consti- pated and I had frequent severe headaches. Then my breath was impure and wind, rising from my stomach made a most foul un- pleasaut taste-in my mouth. I tried many medicines, but only when I began using Mother Seigel's Syrup did I find any relief. I con- tinued using the Syrup and four bottles of it did more for me than all the money that had been spent on doctors and other medicines. I am now, thanks to Mother Seigel's Syrup, in the very best of health.". Mrs. Elizabeth August, Burg Street, opposite Messrs. Pienaar, Ltd., Beaufort West, C.C..

**Don't wait till you have as many miseries as Mrs. August. had, but use Mother Seigel's Syrup as soon as your bowels and stomach get out of order. It will save you from much suffering and loss of time and money.

It is understood that General Sir E. Ellen-has offered to

resign his appointment as Military Member under the new condition of things, and that it has been accepted by H.M. the King from the 1st October next. There will necessarily be a complete re-organisation Ister on of the Military Department as it now oxists. It is understood that Lord Kitchener will have the powers in future of an ordinary member of the Viceroy's Coun cil, and that a member of the Council in the Military Department will be practically the Director Genoral of the Stores Department. The Secretary therein will have the rank of Colonel. Under the Military Department will be the Departments of Supply, namely, the Ordnance, Military Works, Indian Marino, etc. Lord Kitchener will have a Chief of Staff, under whom will be a Deputy Q.-M.-G., and a P. M. O, and will also have a Secretary of the Army Depart- ment, who will hold the rank of colonel There was great excitement at Calcutta in Military, circles at the news. Emma Luyken, German str., 1,109, H. Martens, Swatow July 13, General. DovaLAS STEAMSHIP Co.

A doctor attended me, and one day, after six months' auffering, I was taken for u drive. An old lady who noticed how weak and ill I looked told me of her neighbour who had suffered from my com plaint and who had been cured by Dr Wil liams Pink Pilla, so I determined to trys

them.

It was not long before I felt-relief,' continued Mrs Spriggs. In fact, on the second day or so I felt an improvement.

First of all, my breathing was easier; the pains in the abdomen diminished: also the racking pains in my body. After two buttles I could get about easily, and after four I felt quite strong again. I feel onght to let others know what a valuable eure is at hand in Dr Williams' Pink Pille.' The troubles of Anemia, or Bloodloge. ness, do not end with languor, weakness, depression, and deathly pallor, for the stomach becomes too weak to digest food, and further ailments result. By supplying new and rich blood to the starved veins, Dr Williams' Pink Pille cure the many troubles following Anemia. In like man. ner they havo cured not once, but repeat odly, Bile, Liver disorders, Decline, and Incipient Consumption." Rhoumatism, Sciation, Paralysis, St. Vitua' dance, and Jadies' nervous derangements have also been cured by Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, obtainable at medicine shops, Tho manufacturors, Dr Williams' Medicino Co., Holborn-viaduct, London, will forward shottle for 2a. Od., or six bottles for 13. 9d. Try another shop if Substitutes are offered-health is worth the trouble..

Mrs Spriggs is now an active, healthy woman of thirty-five, and she assured the reportor repeatedly that she was never so well in her life as now.
