SUEZ CANAL COMPANY,

Reduction in Rates

We understand that the Suez Canal rates are to be reduced from January 1 (says the Standard). The traffic of the Canal largely increased in 1994, and this gave a commen- surate increase in the dividend, which last your was 130f, per share and this year 141f. As to whether the reduction is likely to be maintained, a high authority in the shipping world said to one of our represen- tatives yesterday;-In 1903 the Canal Company are going to lose 10,000,0001. in, consequence of this reduction, and it is a question whether or not such a loss can be continued. The company are taking con- siderablo. risk in the Interests of the shipping trade-certainly not in the in- terest of their own shareholders.

The proposed reduction is 75c. por share, which is equal to a reduction of 10,000,000f, or £400,000. The arrangement is just part and parcel of the London pro gramme, and is by no means in

in consequence of the agitation_which was ast en fout" a short time ago.

On the other hand there are shipping 1376 authorities who hold the view that the 750.. reduction is distinctly the outcome of the recent agitation..

At first,' said one of these gentlemen to our representativo, they only talked of n 250. reduction, but ultimately a little for y of 75c. was suggested.

Tho company are paying 28 per cent. dividend on the shares, which is a breach of the London agreement. All profit over, 25 per cent., according to the terms of that arrangement, ought to go to a reduction of the tonnage dues, and if that were adhered to in all probability the rates would be brought down 2 f, or 3 f.

The agreement to which I refer was between M. do Lesseps on the one hand, and the London Commitee of Shipowners on the other. This is a clean, logical agres ment, and would, no doubt, hold good at law. It is a great deal more than an

honourable understanding."

I learnt the other day from a gentle man of exceptionally high authority on these matters that the only explanation which can be given for men like those at the head of the Canal Company's affairs- including representatives of the British Government-practically breaking their. word, lies in the fact that they have dis- covered that the London agreement, if adhered to, would place them in the posi tion of fiduciary legatees. Still, the code EMI-DETACHED VILLAS Two in of honour that regulates private firms Garden Road near the Ferry with fius should apply in the case of great com Bright and Airy Rooms, Gas and Electrio Belis laid on. BIMLA, June 8.-The Government of India, in the Home Department, have issued a resolution dealing with a schome. for the provision of more adequate means for the scientific study of the etiology and maturo of disease in this country. When the new scheme is developed, it should no from longer be necessary for officers to go India to Europe to study the bacteriology and parasitology of tropical diseases, and“ it may be expected that workers from Europa will seek Indian laboratories to avail themselves, under competent direc- of the unrivalled material for study tion, which

the diseases of this country afford. In brief outline, the scheme of the Gov- ernment of India comprises the establish-: ment of a Contral Research Instituto at Kasauli, and a laboratory for scientific, medical, and sanitary work at the head- quarters of each Provincial Government. The functions of the Contral Laboratory will be original resoarch, tho preparation of curative sera for the diseases of man, and the training of scientific workers. judging ita value as foundations for under pinning; but, owing to lick of "apparatus this work was suspended for a time. Mr Jackson, the Diocesan architect, visited the Cathedral on Thursday, and conferred with the Cathedral architects on the matter. It is generally understood that the cast end of the Cathedral was built upon swampy ground, and that the foundations were strengthened by uak piles. After the lapse

of several centuries these piles may very possible be decaying. At any rate, there seems no question that several streams of water run right under that end of the Ca- thedral, and help materially in the subsi dence. At the present time the wall abutting on the Lady Chapel is about two foot out of this perpendicular, and a great part of the cast end is tilting towards the west exactly that distance. What will be done in the matter remains to be settled, but the authorities now, seem determined to do the utmost in their power to stay the sinking.

These meetings prove conclusively enough the extent of the movement, and show that all classes of the community are interested in the progress of the agitation, and are determined to give their suffrages to its

It is reported further that a large trade is dong with America in lamp glassos, which are, it appears, of good quality. That a largo trado is probable is evident from the number of lamps in the city of Canton, and further, from the fact that many of them are burning in the open air and exposed to all draughts. The firm of Ngai Shin-tong apparently has had a largo consignment in stock, and in view of the coming boycott, are selling out as rapid- ly as possible, so that the chimneys of thin firm are everywhere. It would appear that it is allowable to buy and use these and other American manufacturca till the

[Told by a Photographer:] PHOTOGRAPHER is bom, not made,' said a Camera Artist. Ho is born to endure & many troubles as the rest of mankind. Mr Arthur F. Brookes, of 25, The Arcade, Wolverhampton, Eng. land, has travelled through many countries with his camera, but in London his pro-CHINESE. fessional career was threatened. I was ill,' and none of the ductors knew what was the matter. But Dr Williams' pink pills found my trouble and cured it. I was terribly run down.' My nerves seemed to have left me, and at sight of food my stomach would turn. When I forced down little food to keep up my strength, the pains in my chest were excruciating.

Two eminent doctors said I was suffer.

ing from nervous prostration, and ordered complete rest. I was under them i months, but soon after was an ill as ofer. I had such pain in my back as to make me 'cry out and clutch at the first thing I came to.

I attended a hospital for two months, and my cane puzzled evon the clover doctora there. Reduced to a mere skeleton (for eating was impossible) I lingered in a droad- ful state until four months ago I met an old friend who asked me why I didn't try Dr Williams' pink pills-they always set him up. I purchased & Lottle, and it made mo a great doal better. By the time I had finished a second bottle I was rapidly put. ting on flesh. My appotite returned, and I enjoy my meals now, without any ill after-effects. My improved health, after only three bottles, is a revelation. I have not felt so well for over ten years as I do at the present time. There has never been the least return of the pain.'

Nerves broken down by worry and work set up the most difficult form of chronic in- digestion. Broken nerves are nervos atary- ed for the want of blood. Dr Williams' pink pills for. pale people-genuine only with full name, Beven words-make blood. They banish anemia and the pains that affict the weaker sex. But they are equal ly valuable for men, having cured indiges tion, palpitations, bile, nervous depression, sciatica, rheumatism, paralysis, St. Vitus dance, and nervous disorders. Two shill inge and ninepence for one bottle, or thirteen and nine.for six sent to Dr Willi ame' medicine co., Holborn viaduct, Lon- don, will bring the pills by return post. But they can be had at most medicine shops, if readers insist on the genuine.

It is a painful ortrait that the Photo- grapher, whose case is described above, gives of himself. His experience should be a guide to othera.
