The fact that Louis Kahu shot himself' on Wednesday has caused all kinds of talk. It if rumoured that he has lost heavily in naveral deals of late, one being the Eppin gor failure. This talk has caused much uneasiness among the patrons of the bank, and the Bank Commissioners have been requested to take charge of the affairs of the institution. The directors are said to have found the institution's affairs in a badly tangled state and they have decided not to tako action until the State officials have made an investigation.

At a late hour tonight Kahn was resting fairly well and the physicians stated he was in no immediate danger of dying, but there appears to be little hope of his ultimate recovery. Kahn was a heavy spatulator in grain and was, on the wrong

side of the market this season. He was formerly a member of the grain firm of THE ANGLO-AMERICAN STORE. Haslacher & Kahn, but Haslacher with

Batisfied that they were stolen by some preson in its employ, but mystified by the strange circumstances connected with the theft and the absence of a clue, the firm set in motion the detective forces of two con-

tinents in an endeavour to recover the

gems,

In all, ten diamonds were cut from the Excelsior last fall, shortly after its purchase by Tiffany from an English syndicate. The stone was found at Jagersfontion, in South Africa, in 1993, and in the rough weighed 971 carata. It was the largest diamond

the tide rises on the shore of the Arctic Ocean the water rises in the lake, and lowers as soon as the tide in the ocean falls.

This sympathy with the sea, however, does not go far as to make the water of Lake Balawick (as it is called) salt. On the contrary, its water is excellent for drinking.

fish of an excellent kind, too, as, for in- stance, salmon of the best quality.

Another astonishing peculiarity of tho lake la that its temperature rises in winter and falls in summor, Thus, when all the watercourses in its neighbourliood are frozon solid, the water of the lako becomes so warm that it is really pleasant to bathe ip. On the contrary, in summor, its water is so cold that it chills you.

This peculiarity causes the lake to be in winter very full of fish, which travel thither from all the watercourses which empty into it. The number of fish is so great that you can catch them with your hands, and kill a considerable quantity of them with a stick.

MAULED BY A TIGER.

SECUNDERABAD, Juno 7th.-Captain Jocely Mellor, R.F.A., who was so gevero- ly mauled by a tiger, died at the Station Hospital last evening, after undergoing an operation. Particulars of the accident show that Captains Mellor and Symon had mark- ed down a tiger, and that the former put in three shots. The bruto'suddenly sprang out and knocked Captain Mellor over. Al- - though considerably hurt, he raised his knee to protect his head and fired a shot in the chest of the boast, which immediately grab bed him by the thigh and clawed his arm and hand. Captain Symon then came up and put in three shots before the beast loosened its bold.
