It seems therefore appropriate to repro duce an excellent description of the work which was published some timo ago in Shanghai.
The bridge is about two iniles long, and twenty feat above high water level, and is built of steel throughout, the massive girdors being supported on sets of screw- driven tubular pilos. The steel pilos are 'screwed into the bed of the river by means of enormous hand capstan's manned by squads of coolios,

OBTAINABLE AT ALL GENERAL STORES. Hongkong, May 30, 1905.
1059
The bottom end of each pilg has s toothed point with a large inclined blade above it, not unlike the tip of a corkscrow, and to caob pile is clamped an enormous grooved pulley, round which is wound a wire hawser, one end of which is then led to one of the capstans and then the coolies beavo away and the work of acrawing begins. The rotary motion of the piles, with the corkscrew blade, naturally screws the pile down into the mad, and it may be seen gradually sinking till the pulley is level with the platform on which the workmen are atanding. When the pulley reaches this platform, another length of pile" is bolted together and the pulley raised to the upper langes, and the screwing is then resumed and carried on all day, and when the weather permits, all night under very powerful electric lights.
When the piles have been screwed to a sufficient depth, about forty to fifty feet, the water is then pumped from the interior. which is filled up with concrete, which will give more weight and power of resistance to the piles. Wooden piles are then driven around the curront side of the steal piles in the shape of a triangle with the point to the currents the idea being to provent junks, ice, etc., from drifting down and in- juring the main structure, also with a view": to break the force of the current. Huge beds of tree branches, lashed together with wire, are then sunk around the steel piles, and on to these beds hundreds and hundreds of tons of rocks are thrown, end this reckoned to give more
solidity to the river bed where the
piles are driven and possibly prevent the river washing away the founda tions, if such the shifting bed of the river can be called. The piles are placed in sots of four, six, eight, and ten, and each pile is joined by stanchions and girders of great strength, and finally each get of piles is spanned by an enormous girder on which

The river. bod is one gigantic quicksand and already many piles have been sucked under as well as platforms with machinery on; and everything that the ingenuity of man can suggest is being done to prevent recurrences of this and make the bridge a succosa from an engineering-point of view. Breakwaters of stone are being made along the banks to try and prevent the river from underwashing the foundations of the bridge away, and trees are being planted for the purpose of more solidly binding the mad banks together, and each ond of the bridge is being protected and faced by stone dykes- to prevent the water washing away the banks.-P. and T. SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION-TO
THE SOUTH SEAS.
ETANFORD UNIVERSITY, April 28,-An expedition of considerable scientific interest and importance will leave San Francisco about the middle of next-month for tho South Seas, It will be under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences of San Fran- cisco, and besides members of that organisa. tion, it will be made up of a number of scientific students from Stanford University and the University of California. The ex- pedition will extend over ninetcon months, and during that period a great deal of ∙rosearch work will be done among the islands of the tropical sens. The Stanford men who will be members of the party are Messrs. Washington H. Ochsner of Lex- ington, Ky., geologist, and Francis X, Williams of San Francisco, entomologist."
The expedition will be in charge of Mr Beak of the Academy of Sciences, and the work will be done under his direction ---It will proceed down the Coast in a specially chartered yacht, making the first stop at Ensenada, in Lower California. Thenco the party will proceed to the Guadalupe Is- lands, further south, and will spend some time in work among that group. The next point of exploration will be the Clipperton Islands, off the South American const, and from there the party will go to the Galapagos Islands, about 700 miles off the coast of Eouador, lying exactly on the equator, which will be the scene of the most impoft- ant, work to be done by tho expedition. It is planned to devote fifteen of the nineteen months to work upon this group alone.
The Galapagos Islands are of unusual interest to scientists because of the many forms of rare animal life to be found there. There is now but one settlement of Indians, and the party will be able to carry on their work unhindered. A poculiar species of large tortoise, which is fast becoming extinct, will be a special object of study. There is also a breed of wild dogs on the islands of which the party will endeavour to get specimenr. Bugs, birds, lizards and raro species of many kinds are plentiful, nud a full-collection of these will be made. Before the expedition leaves the islands the
the yacht will make a trip to Pannina to sonda shipment of specimens to the United States.

In the Bankruptcy Jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, this morning, beforo His Lordabip Mr F. T. Piggott, Chief Justice, Mr P. W. Goldring (of Messrs Brutton, Hott and Goldring) made an application for the release of Lai Yin, one of the partners in the Ching Hop firm.
