ETHICS OF JOURNALISM."
Words of counsel and warning wore ad- dressed to journalists at a Memorial Hall gathering of the Congregrational Union on May 13, by Mr D. C. Lathbury, late editor of the Pilot.
Close upon half a century has passed, he said, since he dropped his first article into the box of the Morning Star. Its office was on the spot where the New Gaisty Theatre now stood. The change might be s parable of English journalism. It was now lighter, but he did not know that it con- duced to loss heaviness on the part of the roader. Punch was ever full of laughter, but no 'paper had better maintained the dignity of the English Press. Fifty years | ago, however, journalists. thought more of journalism and loss of themselves. It was anonymous, and a small profession. But now a new public had croated a now journa- | liam.
Touching on the relations between editor and capitalists, Mr Lathbury aid it could hardly be a matter of indifference whether Froo Trade or Tariff Reform shaped the future. A journalist should always be ready to sweep a crossing rather than give 1378-way on vital points.

On the question of betting nows, he said in one case a proprietor had faced the ques- tion and answered it in heroic fashion by deciding to exclude tarf news. He had great respect for such horoic action, but he thought the judgment was mistaken, The function of a newspaper was to give a picture of the world, and make what com- ments it likod. The exclusion of such nows gave a false air of innocence to the news that was admitted. Stock Exchange and football intelligence might be as dan" gerous as turf nows. So with bad playg if notices of them were excluded, the public would have no guide. If Divorce Court

On the question of an edito's relations to his contributors, there were two vlows, Locko had said the test of a good editor. was to rewrite an article without the con- tributor discovering it. Othors declared no altoration should be made. But it should be remembered, said Mr Lothbury,- that sometimes, if the matter were excel-

dwolling without risk of losing their lives. HARRIS KEENEY COMPANY
Finally, they becamo'so incensed that the 'best plan would be to starve Roy out, resorted to more energetic measures.
It was first of all decided to bombard the house with artillery, but the authorities objected to this plan, so the order was given to blow up part of the citadel with molinite.
At two o'clock 8,000 people had gathered in the vicinity, and those wore kopt at a safe distance by 700 soldiers. A molinito. fuse, containing 230 charges of that ex- plosive, had been placed against the loft wall of the house by an intropid lieutenant and four sappors. Roy apparently suspected nothing, for he made no sigu.
When all was roady a bugle was blown,
and the sentinels, who were closo to the doomed * fortresg,' immediately retired,
A moment passed, and then there was a loud report, a violent shock, and a cloud of Just and smoko.
Cautiously a number of soldiers advanced to the house, or what remained of it. Tho watchful outlaw saw them, coming, and with agility almost incredible in a man of his he dropped from a window to the
years,
ground and took to his hools.
The crowd saw him and with yells of 'Lynch him they gave chase across the fields. The old man was soon surrounded, and the infuriated' crowd struck and beat him unmercifully, But for the arrival of the soldiers he would have boon killed.
A strotcher was procured, and on this he was conveyed to a neighbouring shed. At six o'clock, protected by a strong military escort, ho was carried to Chatel- lerault Hospital, where he now lies in a vory battored condition.-D. Expresa.

"ALL OVER THE WORLD." AN OLD SOLDIER, OURED OF SEVERE IN DIGESTION, TELLS WHY AND WHERE HE RECOMMENDS MOTHER SEIGEL'S
SYRUP.
"I bave since then recommended Mother Seigel's Syrup to my friends all over the world," the Gold Coast expocially."
This is the statement of a veteran soldier of the British army, who was born in the West Indios, served in the Ashanti war and is still in the service," being employed by the Army Service Corps in the Military Stores at Port Elizabeth. He had suffered for years. from indigestion in Jamaica and has since felt its distressing pains and disablements in Africa, In all cases, on both sides of the world, he turn- ed-for actual help, for relief, to Mother Soigol's Syrup chiefly becauso bis own mother had used it suco asfally with big and other di ber childron,
Mr Caiter is a glive of Kingston, Jamaica, Dor which city his father carried on a large plantation. Ho enlisted in the First West India Regiment and was promoted through various ranks to that of Quartor-Master Ser- goant, serving, in all, for 27 years. Ho lives now at 25, Frere Street, South End, Port Elizabeth. His exporicnco has been so wide spread and unique that what he says is of particular interest, so we give his lottor, dated Novombár 21, 1001, just as it was received: THE SOLDIER'S OWN STORY.
Der.
I cannot recollect the exact date of my first attack of indigestion, but anyway I was a Quar- tor Master Sergeant of the 1st British West India Regiment at the time and stationed at Kingston. I used to feel out of sorts; I always folt as thongh Thad eaten too much, ovan though, in fact, it would be the smallest morsal. I had blown-out, puffed-up, sensation after each meal, and I can assure you Ifolt miserable. "Remembering that my parents had used Mother Boigel's Byrup for the younger members. of our family and as they pinned their faith to Mother Seigel's curativo powers, I considered I would not go far wrong by giving it a trial my- salt. I had suffered for three years and was determined to get rid of my trouble somehow. I was wailding up Orange Street, Kingston, Jamaica, who I came to Dr. Goddous chemist July 12 shop, and there I purchased a bottle of Mother
Seigel's Syrup. I used it for about two months,
at the end of which I found I had no farther
need of medicines or doctors; I was completely caród.
I have since then recommended. Mother Saigel's Syrup to my friends all over the world, the Gold Coast especially, where I had to give myself another course of Belgel's owing to The severe climatic conditions, and the generally helthy condition of our living. I am still enjoying good health and pleased to be able to gire you this statement.”

CONSULAR CHANGES AT
AMOY.
(From Qur Correspondent.) »
AMOY, June 18,
It is with great regret that I have to Announce that the English Consul, Mr Hausser, has just left us for a furlough home. He will be greatly missed, for he was a man who performed his duties in the office well and faithfully. He was a first-class Chinese scholar and he was also a shrewd business man, and spared no pains in mak- ing himself master of any case that came Mr.H, E. Pollook, K. C. instructed by before him officially. When he was once Mr C. F. Dizon, appeared for Lam ng assured that it was a perfectly gonuino case and Mr H. N. Our regret This action was begun in November last of his loss is somewhat mitigated by the year at Saigon by Lam Tung suing the fact that Mr Mansfield, the permanent Captain Superintendent of Police for $2000, Consul of this port, who has been at home being money found on Chow Kwan, whose for some time, is expected at any moment extradition from Hongkong was applied to resume his duties. "Cortsin questions had been put by Mr Ferrers to witposses which were objected to by Mr Pollock, but after considerable argument the Chief Justico ruled that a man's acts, incidental to and corroborating the claim, were relative to the claim and
could be admitted.
Mr Ferrera produced a document, in French, purporting to be a judgment of the proceedings in the French Appeal Court,

Hon. Mr F. H. MAY, C.M.G. (Colonial Secretary).
Mr Pollock objected to its admission. It could not be ovidence against the plaintiff,cy

The Chief Justice asked to what part of the case did it refer. Was it not rather evidence in support of the defendant's caso as opposed to the opposition of Mr l'ollock's client 7
Mr Pollock read the document and said that he had no objection to it going in and being read by the Chief Justice subject to any objection he (Mr Pollock) might raiso in connection with it later on.
Mr Ferrors then read the document. It was an appeal from a judment given at Vinhlong on March 18, 1905, which sentenced Chow Kwan to five years' impri- sopment and Li Sam to three years' impri. sonmont, The appeal was between Li Sam

[BY THE NONENTITY.] The funeral of Zih Chin Foo, formerly Compradore of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, was a very swagger affair. The worthy gentleman diod on May lat, but his funeral did not take place until last Sun- day, so it is presumed his relatives have had plenty of time in which to mourn, and incidentally feast, What, in the eyes of Europeans, a farce these grand processions are, and what a torrible waste of money. Imagine the death of a statesman at home and what astonishment it would cause, if banners bearing legends of his good deeds preceded the-coffin. What would his political opponents think of some of them? In this instance, the procession took over an hour to pass in the Foochow Road, as two thousand persons followed, and this number without counting the native military escorte and police. Besides being very wealthy, the deceased was a mandarin of some rank, but due honour was paid him, sixty mon carrying the coffin which was built of the most expensive wood, covered with magni- ficent embroideries and estimated to have cost $5,000.

His Pupils and Indian Wrestlers.
The challenges and counter-challenges that have passed between Sandow and the Indian wrestlers have considerably added to the interest, taken in his visit to Madras. 2181 Recently Mahbool Khan, the Indian wrestler, failed to appear to stand up to one of Sandow's" pupils, and this was attributed to his courage having failed him at the last moment,

For the disappointment caused by Mah. bool Khan's absence the public were amply repaid by the presence of fresh men look- ing for laurels. Three Indian wrestlers, the leador of whom is named Kareem Bukah, who is reputed to be a clover exponent of the art, had accepted Sandow's offer, and all three were allowed to try con. olusions with Sandow's pupils. First, ono of Kareem Buksh'a juniora was pitted against Sandow's. French pupil, to wrestle in the Greco-Roman style. The French. man was by far the biggor and heavier man, and, though the little Indian was unable to overthrow his sturdy opponent, he rendered vory good account of himself, and there was great excitement when be more than once forced the Frenchman to adopt defen. eive tactics. The match ended in a draw. Sandow'e' Indian pupil was then pitted against the other junior wrestler and against Karoom Baksh himself. With a thorough knowledge of the art of Indian wrestling. backed by the muscular powers derived from Sandow's system of physical culture, the Indian pupil proved himself superior to both his opponents, and defeated them easily, amidst loud applause.

So soun did they begin to do me good that, before the third bottle was finished I felt quite my old self. I could take my regular food without the horriblo sick faintness after it which made
mo so miserablo before I used these pilla. In fact, I improved all round, and am now a younger man altogether, ready any time for a good, hard day's work. I can work from early morning to night, and never feel sired. I have astonished my ductors Cno of them said, Your stomach has healed splendily and when I told him that was owing to Dr Williams' pink pills, he said, They have dono wonderful things' för you.

Mr Barnes, whose home is at 27, West- struct, Cleethorpes, Grimsby, England, is one of many bread, winners who owe the continuance of their working life to Dr Wil- liams' pink pills. These pilla give strength; they are not a purgativo. They cure in digestion and stomach disorders, as they cure rheumatism, eczema, anemia, and other disorders arising out of impoverished or poisoned blood, by making yow blood. St Vitus' dance, paralysis, fits, norvous break- down, and other nerve troubles are cured by thom in the same way, and womon know why the new, regular blood which these pills make does them so much good, Dr Williams' Medicino Co., Holborn vinduct; London, send a bottle for two shillings and nineponce, or six for thirteen and nine; but they can be had at most medicine shops.
