LITERARY NOTES.
[FROM HOME. PATEES.]
At length an authoritative biography of James Anthony Froude is in preparation. Me Herbert Paul, whose qualifications for the task are indisputable; is busily engaged in-writing the book and lessra Isbister hope to publish it in the autumn. There can bo no doubt that it will not merely throw fresh light on Froude's brilliant services to English literature, but also clear up many obscure points in his career. It will contain a good deal of fresh informa tion concerning Froude's youth and early manhood. Mr Paul is writing the book |with the approval, and to some extent the
assistance, of the historian's family, and”. his own reputation as a writer is of a kind to enhance the interest of what promises to be one of the most attractive books of the next publishing season.

Many people will be glad to learn that Canon Moyrick is about to publish -his re- miniscences. His knowledge of Oxford- it is intimate and unusual-goes back to- 1847. Memories of Life" can scarcely fair to be an interesting book, especially as Canon Meyrick knew at close quarters a good many prominent men, and has in con sequence something fresh and personal to say about Nowman and Manning, Pusey and Jowitt, Gladstono and Lord Salisbury, Burgin and Stubbs. But unless wo aro Canon's reminiscences greatly mistaken, the
at least to lovora of English poetry-of A. II. Clough, of whom singularly little is known, are likely to prove even more at- tractive than gossip about statesmen and scholars with whom the world is alre dy tolerably well acquainted.
An important work on The City Com panies of London' may shortly, be expect- od. The writer is the Rev. P. H.
Ditchfield, an accomplished antiquary. The
volume, which is to be finely illustrated, will be published by Messra J. M. Don't and Co. We understand that it will contain graphic and picturesque sketches, based strictly on old records, of the Livery. Companies and their services, not in one, but in many directions, to the City and the nation.
Chronicles of the City of Porugia is another book which Messrs Dont have in- preparation. It is a translation of Mata- razzo's well-known work on one of the most attractivo of Italian cities. It gives a vivid and fascinating description of' Porugia at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 10th centuries, and has been translated by Mr E. G, Morgan..

the 13th of February, 1656, and Oliver Croniwell ordered a public funoral in the Abbey, and made a grant towards it from the Treasury. He was a man who, in an
age of political and religious strife, enjoyed
the confidence of all parties, so lofty was his character, so wide his leaning, so beautiful his spirit. The stone which has just been, raised to his memory is due to the admiration of a modern' scholar, Dr. „Salmon, lato Provost of Trinity Collogo, Dublin. This recalls the fact that Arch- biskop Ussher's library is now at Trinity College-a gift of Charles II. to Dublin in the year after the Restoration.
The career of Gregory the Groat, oven before he became a monk, was so remark- able, that any really scholarly attempt to ra-tell the story in the modern historical tomper of dispassionnte investigation is sure of a welcome. This is the task which Mr Homes Duddon, the well-known Follow ofLincoln, Oxford, has just completed. Tho book is in two volumes, and' is entitled "Gregory the Groat-His Place in History and Thought." It was in the reign of Henry VIII, that Tho Trinity Houso' received its charter, and for nearly four.centurios it has pursu ed its boneficent work." Mr Walter Mayo has just compiled from official papers a full account of this old corporation. The book, which Messrs Smith, Eldor are to publish almost immediately, apart from all that it will have to toll us of the control light of houses round the coast, will show what
the Trinity House has dono in times of military alarm, like the war with Napolcon,
in guarding the approach to London by way of the Thames. The volume will be enriched with portraits and facsimiles of historic documents.
Messrs Chatto and Wind us, with laud. able enterprise, are about to publish, in six volumes, & uniform library edition of Mr Swinburne's Tragedies. The first volume, which will be ready shortly, is to „contain "The Queen Mother' and · * Rosa- nond. A limited large paper edition is also announcod.
Messrs. Dent, who have taken over 'The Queen's Prime Ministers'' sorics intend to comploto it-and possibly to extend its acopo-under the original Editör, Mr Stuart J. Reid. A monograph on Lord Rosobory is to be added, as soon as possible.
Mr Arthur Symons, ono of the few in- timate friends of the late Ernest_Dowson, has written a biographical sketch for The Collected Poems' of that clever but unhappy writer. Mr John Lane is to publish the ́book, which, by way of frontispiece, is to have a portrait by Mr Rothenstein. The cover is from a desigfy the late Aubrey Beardsley.
The Candidate' is the title of an im portant political novel, by Mr J. A. AI- sholor, which Messrs Harper aro to publish shortly. It is a romance woven round the political adventures of a candidato for the tenancy of the White House, and rumour has it that it is founded on the actual career of a well-known public man, in the United States.

Another mysterious case on a gunboat at an Admiral's inspection. The great idea on this particular occasion was to get the guns loaded and fired as quickly as possible after the order for General Quarters' was given. In those days the guns had a tompion-a species of cork for the muzzle which kept sea-water and dirt out of the bore of the gun, when not actually in use-- which had to be removed before the gun was loaded. To do this a man had to climb out of the port along the slippery gun and, eitt ing straddle logs, tug away until the tompion came out. Meanwhile the captain of the gun, looking through the breech end, reported bore clear! as soon as he saw the tompion removed. Now this took time of course! Frequently tho tompion was not removed at all by hand, but simply blown overboard with the first shot. It was a dangerous proceeding, for, on this accasion, the tompion had evidently got swollen into the muzzle, there was no yout for the gas of the charge when the gun was fired, and the four-inch guu practically dis- appeared in the explosion which followed. No ono was hurt. Bat, didn't the scientist's havo an innings at the Court of Enquiry!
