The only unusual thing is that the employers should have had to agree to pay for the coolies' wives if they are wanted in South Africa. The Chinese know this perfectly. well, but, as is the custom, they do not want their wives when they areout for work:

Capt. Jorgensen of the "Pechili " re- ported meeting the Japanese transport "Chuyetsu Maru" with a great part of her Captain stern blown away by a mine. Jorgensen offered to tow her to Chofoo but the captain refused. There was a big hole blown right through her, through which the cargo in the after hold had dropped into the sea, and a house on deck was blown away without leaving a trace.

Her bow was in the air and her stern under water when the "Pechili" left her, and Capt. Jorgensen had little doubt that she sank. We know, however, from Japan that her bulkheads kept her afloat and she is being repaired.
