The following day a messenger arrived from the Amis earnestly begging the Mis alon to return to the shelter of Kabul His Highnees, it appears, had sent off, the moment he heard of the anowatorm. But

the Pass having been crossed, it was decided to wait in Camp until the weather bleared

tin

and then to proceed, as the country on

Indian side is co

comparatively safe.

The Mission was thus enabled to reach India on the data expected.

During their stay in Kabul, the Mission was most hospitably entertained, the cold throughout the winter was intense, and very heavy snow lay in the city. The whole time froze hard, every night, but became soft and slushy in the hust of the sun during the day, making any movement so difficult that it would have been impos sible to have the return march very much Booner, even had negotiations been con cluded

It is understood that the results obtained are those announced by Lord Bath in the House of Lords, that is to say,

har a treaty been concluded with the present: Amir very similar to that which existed with his Highness Abdur Rahman.

The negotiations proceeded smonthly throughout and would have been completed even sooner but for the Amir's being laid up for six weeks with a bad attack of gout, His Highness was so anxious not to inter- 957

rupt the negotiations that he arranged to ace the Mission in the sleeping apartment where he was lying ll. But it was of course difficult to settle intricate points so quickly under these conditions as could have been done in Durbar. It was only after his Highness had recovered, thore fore, that the treaty was finally signed. The proceedings terminated with a great dinner in the house of SISTE Anasrullah Khah at which the Amir and all the prin- cipal nobles of the State were present, and the pro nga wore of the most cordial character.

According to the Friend of India, an ex- tmordinary care of murder came before the Sosalons Judge, Dacas, in March when three men were charged. The alleged facts. of the case are briefly as followA-

The sccnsed Lalmohon Mazumbar, Pro- sanne Mazumdar, and the murdered man, Anda Mondal, or

were the dis of the accused Sadhu Kala Chand.

Of the 23rd of Agrahayana, last, a girl in Talmohon's family fell ill of cholera, and the women of the family, having great faith in fadhu Kala Chand, implored him to save the girl. Kala Chand gave them assurance, saying 'No fear; mothers, I will kill Jama, there will be no death.

How Jams met his death and how the woman was treated was narrated by a wit- nes, Chandra Mohan Mazumdar, aged 17. It tould appear that the accused and An

Soon after, Pro- sanm entered, followed by Ananda, who prostrated himself in front of the Sadhu. Lalmohen asked the latter. In this the time and Badhu, answering in the affirm-- ative Lalmohoo took Ananda by the hair, while Prosanna took up a knife, and as Ananda was lying on his face, Presanna, putting a foot on Ananda's back, lifted him slightly by the hair and thrust the knife in his throat, Lalmohon and Presanna then carried the body away. Lalmohon, who was in the yard, warned the women to stay inside the house. He and Prosanna then entered, the former crying 'You alees, come here naked and salute the Sadhu, otherwise I will put fre round

Witness was also told to bring his aunt, which he did, and Lalmo- hon went to his own house, where alo lived Rajan Mazumdar, to whom Ananda was nagas (serf), and brought Rajani's wife and daughter and five other women. They were taken to the verandah and ordered to strip naked and salute the Sadhu. Being unwilling to do so, Prosanna and Lalmohon took their clothes sway by force, and Lalmohon's wife was treated in the same way, After they had saluted the Sadhu they all went away except I linohon's wife, his sister and a sick girl named Sails bala. Prosanna then began to make a torch with a quilt blanket (belonging to Lalmohon's wife) and other bodding tied to the end of a straight bamboo. was poured upon Some kerosene oil this torch and lighted. Frosanna ap- paars then to have endeavoured to set fire to Rajani Mazumdar's hut but un-.] successfully.

The women were again brought out into the yard, made to restrip, and compelled to burn certain parts of the bodies with the torch. Lalmohon asked if he would have to do the same thing with his wife, and the Sadhu told him that if he did not he would be turned

into a goat or sheep. The woman was therefore taken by her husband and placed astride over the burning torch, being held there by the two men. The Sadhu, then gave the torch to Lalmohon and told him to apply it to himself. After this the other women were brought in and thrown on the fire. Witness, finding, that he was to be treated in the same way, escaped, and hid in a hut. At this juncture, apparently, the murderers wore disturbed, several men coming into the yard. A struggle ensued, though whether the accused were captured and arrested as the immediate result is not quite dear. Prosanna, however, seems to have been tied down, as the witness stated that he snapped the bands before he could be safely secured by newly-made cords.

Another story apparently as reliable and well founded, states that this secret service agent of Governor Tecson, found his way into the good graces of Samson and by making various presents to him of rice and other eatables became one of his bosom friends.

Two distinct stories are told as to the killing of this notorious bandit. The kil- ling is accredited to a spy of Governor The Dock Company's tug "Robert Tecson. Restlessness in Kwangtung,

(From a Correspondent.) It is reported that in the Eastern part of the province of Kwangtung there is a considerable movement on foot, which; in Bomercspects, resembles the Boxer outbreak of 1900. The leader of this restlessness is said to be a bearded woman. She has been urging the people to form themselves into a guild or association. She gives out that she is an incarnation of a fairy, who has come down to teach the people the arts of magic. During the spring, large numbers of people have been moved to lead. The Parsees have once more shown that exclusiveness and aloofness which forms one of their strongest points of similarity to the Jews, says The Friend of India. For some time prat the community had been agitated by the question whether proselytes 2181 from other creeds should or should not be admitted to the Zoroastrian faith. As long

ago aв 1903 a committee was appointed to inquire into the matter, and its report has just been submitted to a mooting held at Bombay. Expert opinion had arrived at the conclusion that there is nothing in the teaching of Zoroaster forbidding pro. selytism; but the Committee, notwith standing, decided that conversion to Zorons. trianism was inadvisable and disadvant-

of Sicily can only live in their own country in misery the best thing they can do la to leave it, and go elsewhere. For a thinly. populated country, like Australia, the adop. tion of the policy advocated by Mr Whelpley would mean stagnation, and eventual de- line. He is evidently one of the unfortun- ately increasing school who distrust the ability of people to manage their own affairs, and think that governments can manage them bettor. Happily, his scheme is impracticable, as the nations of the world are not likely to combine for any auch pur- pose. If it could be carried out it would be à distinctly retrograde step.

The question was finally decided in the above-mentioned mesting which resolved that no professors of other faiths should be admitted into the Zoroastrian fold, because such admission would militate against the original unity and ancient traditions of the Parsee com- munity.
