consent, on the ground of, inter alia, in- ability to live happily together! Me- redith's amendation of the law which made twain-one flesh pales-into-insignificance before such a conveniently elastic custom f Among the Kandyans there are twockinde of marriages the diga and the bins. In the former the girl enters the husband's family; in the latter the husband enters the wife's, family. But in both marriages the contract is terminal at will. Mr Arunachalam give his approved to this,

system, in a sort of far-off echo of Meredith in these words:

...

The Sinhalese deserve credit for evolving a marriage system well suited. to the social needs of modern civilized life, and not unworthy of adoption in those countries where marriage has for all practical purposes coused to have any religious significance and became a civil contract."-

Taking the two kinds of marriages, in the "

'diga,' the husband is

THE PREDOMINANT PARTNER, The wife and the dowry passes into the family of the husband, and she logs all claim upon her ancestral property, except for maintenance in case she is deserted, In the bina the wife is the predominant partner, and the husband is dependent on her and her parents, and is liable to be turned out at short notice. The wife can at any time take another husband more agreeable to herself or the rest of the family. This latter kind of wedding is the ona contracted by heiresses, and there is a saying among the Kandyans that a 'bina husband should not take to his wife's house? any property save a torch and a walking stick, with which he can depart at any mo mant!

The manner in which a marriage is ar ranged is interesting. As with certain other races in the Island, the parents and re- lations have a great deal to do in the mat-

THE SIMPLON TUNNEL.

An Interesting Journey

At the consecration of the Simplon Tunnel on April 2 (says the Standard's the first thing that

correspondent at Milan) the f attracted my notice at Iselle was the train awaiting us, made up of the trucks that usually carry the minors to and from their work. These rooßess carriages are divided into two miniatura compartments, each seating two persons, with their faces, and two with their backs, to the engine. An oil lamp is fixed on their side, between the entrances there are no door-so that the train alone creates a kind of twilight in the tunnel for the first five and a quarter milos. For this distance, indeed, the work is practically finished, the scaffolding and. other encumbrances have been removed, and everything is seen plainly enough in the large vault, lined, from first to Jast with masonry, through which we run. Every 200 matrou is marked off by n "arge progressive number on the wall. Five of these go to a kilometro: and at each of the latter there is a pointsman and a line branching off into the parallel tunnel, the completion of which has been indefinitely postponed. At No 39, just before we have covered five miles, the steam locomotive drawing the train is exchanged for another driven by compressed air, and the train is illuminated at intervals by large acetyleno Tamps. For half way between 12 and 13, wn get te adiut a mile of road where snicke and host must be kept down as much as possible. Here there is barely room for the passenger trucks, which, are somewhat Jarger than those used to carry away the atuff excurated, to pass; and we ard cons stantly warned, as the ragged rock or the scaffolding of thick beams hemis us in on three sides, to keep our heads down and not let any other part of the body project from the carriages.

During the passage through this restrict- ed space cold and warm water occasionally falls upon us in small quantities. It is never boiling, the cold streams having been employed to neutralise the hottest jets; and this is lucky, for de rout is so low that wo have to go baréhended, while the umbrellas we have been advised to -bring are useless for the time being. In places we see sheets of zine that protect us against a shower-bath or worse, in fact, sume of the springs, especially when first met with, were very formidable, not only on account of their size and of a tempera- turo attaining to 120 deg., but alsà of a pressure varying between 159) lb. and 3000 lb. per square inch. at other points we pass an apparatus which throws off

hose, from a number of apertures, and, gives us a pleasant sensation of relief It is

a powerful pump at No. 93 that sends the fresh air from outside along the tunnel parallel to ours to blow away the moke down the latter, and fight the temperature. The heat has been growing continually, until, as we get to No. 46, about 5 miles from the Iselle en- trance, the thermometer has risen to 86deg. The train stops, and we soon f or to the iron gate, among men carrying handlamps. At one place, where the last diaphragm of rock was blown away, the passage is nar. rower than usual, but wo have relatively mora space around us even here that we bad now and then in train. There is a little delay in opening the gate. as the train on the Swiss side keeps us waiting, and a fow of the guests are slightly indisposed for the time being, the 98ileg, now reached by the thermometer proving to much for them. But the gate opens at last, and the long- expected meeting takes place, giving sc casion to fresh outbursts of the onthusiasm that has characterised the whole of the

proceedings. The area fow yards to walk on the other side before we get to the com pleted tunnel, where the Swiss train is waiting for us. From this point -

Hongkong is becoming quite famed for motor and oil launches, and recently another Jaunch was despatched to Manila. The Launch was built by the Iberica Company to the order of Mr Gonsalves, and was fitted with a Listers & horse power petrol motor, The beat was made of stool, and is 25 feet long.

On the trial trip a speed of nine miles was registered and the launch gave every satisfaction. Mr G. C. Moxon is the sole agent for Listers petrol motors.

Cosmopolitan.-Gulf of Venice. Aberdeen:-

Mongkong Tides,

• The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at. Teim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-9-0.

-

The sore of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 8 feet 4 inchos, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdoep, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.

Add 23 minuten 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
