the stark periscope "betray her.
It is greenly livid, the light i in which the Men of the Submarine labour; green and pallid and ghostly. The voice of the engine tatters the silence and the nerves of the weak. But the Men of the Submarino are not weak.
It creeps through the secrot undersea like a half-blind watersnake, rubbing shoulders. with Destruction and there is one, subtler than serpents, who gathers himself together and watches the gliding back. This one is -Death,
The Submarine goes on-out to the deep waters; fainter and fainter grows the out- line of the gaunt periscope. It fades out and is gone. You cannot see it from the land.
The Men of the Submarine ara out there All alone. If a little mishap is born among the whirling wheels, the impatient ma- chinery

They have become accustomed to the cramped, hot, and tiny alleys and tubes and holes-they crouch almost comfortably.

Balloon Race.
M. Jacques Faure, the aeronaut who recently inade a record journey from Lon- don to Paris, and who left Folkestone on April 6 with MM. Kergaxion and Gasnier, successfully crossed the Channel and landed near Calais early on April 7. Though a gale was blowing, the party hadhad
an excellent trip and made a safo descent.
Mr Frank Butler, who ascended on April in one of the four balloons which were attempting the race to France, in an inter- view attributed his failure to the dropping of the wind. We had rather bad luck,' he said, and ought to have got across. The temperature was so variable, how. ever, that when we were at an altitude of ten thousand feet we had only one bag of ballast left, so we had to parachute down. We landed within two miles of the coast, near Hastings. It was very cold in the air, and we had a good deal of snow in the louds. The farmer on whose farm we landed did not seem particularly glad to see:

MAS MARGRES RAVEN RELATES VERT GRAPHICALLY IN A LETTER How Joz OVERCAME HE DEMPÄN,
There is no joy like the joy of being again in perfect health after you have been disabled, so to speak, by the pains and after-effects of a long, todious illness. That is the dominating note struck in a letter written on December 7th, 1904, by Miss Margret Raven, of 127, Quay Street, Ultimo, Sydney, in which she most graphically describes her pine, and the wearing, wearying affects of the disease that, in the form of indigest- ion, tortured her for years, and then the hap- piness that has come over her since her release from all theso miseries.
"REACHING TEE FOTTOM RUNG "
In her letter she says: "I don't think any

That is the end of the first phase of Miss Raven's remarkable story. Now mark the jubilant feeling with which she describes the action of the wonderful cure which brought back the sunlight into her existence:"To my great joy Mother Saigal's Syrup proved to be quite as good as my friend had represented it to be. From the first it enabled me to retain my food, and within a couple of weeks it created quite an appetite, a thing I had not possessed for years previously.

Soldiers Held Up.
(From our Correspondent.)
CANTON, May 11.
At a place near here, named the Nine Streams, a clever robbery was affected a few nights ago. The villagers, being well off, wore assured of perfect safoty from robbers, because they had provided them seivon with a guard of eighteen soldiers, who, at nights, in companies of four, patrolled the streets or were supposed so to to do. Hence, though-robbers atounded all through the neighbourhood; the inha. bitanta dwelt at ease.
Hot verlately, the soldiers have been remiss in their patrol, and in other ways have been careless and idle. The natural consequence was that a few nights since, a band of armed men fell upon the mat-shed, used as barracks, and auddenly overpowered the entire company, The marauders seized the whole eighteen, and having gagged them, tied them to various parts of the building. They thon leisurely possessed themselves of the soldiers firearms; next they secured much booty from the villagers Iantly they seized on two of the rich men of the village and carried them off to hold for ansom.
When the robbers had decamped and the villagers were free to vociferate and vituperate, they poured the full vials of their fiercest wrath upon the luckless soldiers as they lay before them bound and gagged. Then, though they released the with black ropes, and led them away to prisoners, one by one, they rebound them.

There is now in Sydney an old note-hook, containing notes in the proper handwriting of a diligent articled clerk who yed and had his being when living men remembered seeing Charles L beheaded... Notes they are, the faded ink and crabbed writing inform the reader, of the practice obtain- ing in Banco Regis (King's Bench). Papers had to be dated in Latin then, and it is du'y sat out that

Mr Roo, therefore (and his attorney have no difficulty in ascertaining the fact they must breath defianca to Mr Doe and all his works through the trumpet tones of an appearance, and so the solicitor for the de fendant (for in that character must the estimable Mr Ros now be contemplated) in his turn proceeds upstairs and files a docu. ment requiring the plaintiff to take notice that the defendant has appeared herein, and intenda to defend the action.
And now each side is aware, that the other means business; and the defendant
