I desire this freedom in the main for three reasons. It will strengthen our hands in any negotiations by which we may hopo to.. lower foreign hostilo tariffs. It may enable us to protect the fiscal independence of those colonies, which desire to give un ferential treatment. The advent of the Salvation Army into Japan a few years ago was marked by a very amusing incident. One of the methods | GENERAL STOREKEEPERS, adopted to popularise the army in foreign landa is for the officers, immediately on en- tering a country, to adopt native costume, and thus so far as dress is concerned, become one with the people. This rule was adher ed to by the pioneer contingent which sailed from thin country to open fire in Japan, and with an amusing result,

On arrival at Hongkong the Salvationiste desired to doff the poke bonnets and quisi military uniforme, and finish the remainder

of the journey attired in Japanese gostume. With that end in view, they sought out a Chinose tailor, and to him they gave in. structions to make. Japanese dresses for the

entire party.

The officer in charge of the contingent, being somewhat ignorant of the many kinds of dresses worn in the country of the Mikado, did not particularise in his in- structions to the tailor, who, from very innocence, or from a strong sense of humour--very probably the latter-fitted out each member of the party with a peculiar looking dress of many bright colours.

These dresses the Salvationists donned, and on landing in Yokohama. marched through the principal streets of the city feeling quite proud of their native -costumes..

The Japs seemed highly amused at what was to them a strange spretacie, and the cause of their amusement was only ascor tained whom the Salvationists discovered that the tailor in Hongkong had fitted them out with nightdresses I
