His father, the late General Trepoff, whose attempted assassin- ation by Vera Sassulitch first attracted foreign attention to the Nihilist movement, bore a most extrageainary resemblance to the late Emperor William, who was exceed ingly fond of him and overwhelmed him. with honors, Trepoff is a man whose career has been wonderfully brilliant He had attained the rank of colonel before he wae 28 years of age, and while at Kieff was the particular fatorite of that grand old-- soldier, Dragonro, then commander-in chief there He is a man of the highest personal integrity with a keen sense of honor, official as well as prirate, has charming manners, a quiet dignity in his berring that is infinitely attractivo, the sadness of his eyes contrasting strangely with the smile that is almost always on his lips. His daughter is the favorite nisid of honor of the Empress, and the Emperor. has the most absolute confidence in this man, who, while an able administrator, is, above everything else, a thorough soldier.

but with many. Of necessity papers and documents must be filed, and understood, and those administering the law must be able at onco to lay their hands on the materiala necessary to the adjudication of each cause. Unless a uniform practice is established, if the judge has, before enter. ing on an inquiry, first to be informed of the means that each individual litigant has taken to present his case, the simplest mate ter would take a long time in hearing.
And the broad principle underlying all the minor rules is clear enough. It is that the defendant shall know before he comes into Court exactly what he is being sued for, and that the plaintiff'shall know, on his side, what answer to his claim the defendant intends to set up. Knowing this, each party knows what matters of fact or law are in dispate, and there ore knows how best to prepare hirasolf by call
ing witnesses, by thinking out arguments, or otherwise, to have the case tried, most quickly and effectively.
Remembering this, it is not difficult to follow the adventurous voyage of Jolin Doo when, on righteous vengeance bent, 1412 he embarks on the stormy sea of litigation with Richard Roo, from the time he waighs anchor with a writ of summons to the time
