A WRONGED GIRL'S REVENGE,

NEW YOER, Mar. 2-Back of the Acandal involving the Inte millionaire Oliver of Pittsburg and Margaret Kingsley Carpenter, the hotel stenographer who became his mistress and who later got 8400,000 from Oliver's estate on the ground that he was the parent of her child, lioş a story of a wronged girl's revenge.

Nonia Irving is the girl who figures in this dramatic story. She Cane from Syracuse, N. Y.,

the city which produced Mrs Kingsley-Carpenter, who induced the girl to come to New York and live with her, in the magnificent house provided there for Mrs Kingsley Carpenter by Oliver. Nonie Irving was plied with wine and subjected to heartless treatment.- On realising her wrong, she was heartbroken but resentful, and she devised an effective revenge.

Concealing her feelings, sho remained. with Mrs Kingsley-Carpenter one year as her cɔmpanion and amanuensis. In that time she collected data, and saved copies of documents and letters which she later on laid before Oliver as proof that bisnistress was untrue to him. She was able to prove that during the periods of Oliver's absence from the house, Mis Kingaley Carpenter received as callers racing men, politicians,

actors, and a policeman, and on these sho squandered her 25,000 a month allowance. 1376 Oliver promptly came to New York, dis- continued providing for his mistress, and severed all relations with her.

THREE DAYS. MAN-HUNT.

Thirty Pursuers Find Their Match.

After a chage lasting nearly three days. Heinrich Petersen, who is alleged to have stolen £30 from his employer at Waltham Abbey, was captured in Princes-strect, un- der the walls of the Bank of England.

Peterson is a young Swede, who for three weeks had been in the employment of a fellow-countryman, a forist, at Waltham Abbey. On Sunday, January 1, Inspector Jones, of the Waltham police, arrested him on a charge of theft from the florist,

Close to old Waltham Abbey the pri soner broke away, and, leaping a high fence, ran across some fields. Very quick- ly hu out-distanced his thirty odd pursuers,

*

for he is a man of oxceptionally fine physi- que and extraordinary strength. He is only 5 ft. 0 in. in height, but has chost and limbs of great girth, while his muscles are liko iron.

In the dusk, while his pursuers were slowly beating a thicket which they had seen him enter, he slipped away on the other side.

The police wore baffied, but next morn. ing they heard that a stranger in a long,

plum-colored feat and cap, and brown gaiture, had been seen at Sawbridgeworth

at ten o'clock the previous night, Hot in pursuit, they traced the man to Brox. bourne, only to learn that he had taken a ticket for London.

There was an exciting, sceno when late. on the Tuesday night seven policemen ran the fugitive-sometimes known as Julius

Cuttler-to earth in the city. He fought wildly, and his captors had to strap him down to a stretchor before the police station was reached.

So the Waltham police, who had never relaxed the pursuit, triumphantly took back the flying Swede.

LYNCHING IN ARKANSAS.

And now comes nowa of another lynching Hongkong or Kowloon,

in America, this time a 'white man being the victim. A telegram from Newport, Arkansas, on December 31, says :-Louis Allwhite, a white man, 43 years old, was lynched about 2 o'clock this afternoon by a mob of undisguised white men, estimated to number 700.

Tho sheriff and his guard were over powered, the prisoner secured and escorted to a quilroad trestle, some two hilos distant, from which he was hanged.

Allwhite was, perhaps, the most com. posed person in the entire party. He never trenibled or shed 'a ́tear, nor did his voice betray the slightes emotion as he said:

You will later hang another man for the crime you are now killing me for."

*His body was cut down shortly after, dead, and brought to undertaking rooms in this city. He was an old resident of this section, and was suspected of murder of Pink Bateman, several years ago, but this he denied on the scaffold.

Mob spirit has been in evidence for the past two days, or since the coroner's inquest began to secure evidence which fastened the awful crimes of the outrage and murder of Mrs Rachel Kinkannon and her daughter, Mrs Amelia Maudlin, on the Jacksonport-road, two miles from this city, on Christmas morning. mother-and-daughter were bound upon a

REPORTED NAVAL

ENGAGEMENT.

Off the Anambas...

Hospital Ship Enters Saigon,

It has been reported by cable from Saigon to a local shipping firm that a naval engagement has taken place off the Anamba Islands, where a portion of the Baltic floot was reported to have anchored.

The cablegram goes on to state that the report should be received with great caution, as in Saigon it is looked upon as improbable.

It is hardly feasible that a naval, engagement could have taken place, unless only five Russian vessels took part, or unless the forty-two vessels Iphigenia" on April sighted by tho

sel; and two improved " Delphins." All- these boats have been forwarded by rail but whether the Russians will be ablo to handle them is a matter for the future to disclose. They have signally failed with other vessels of war that have been in existence for years, and it is problematical in the extreme what would happen were they to take the new fangled submarines into action.

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT HOME.

This season a new departure has been taken with the annual competition for the championship of amateur billiards. In place of asking every aspirant for the title to go to London, the idea of arranging local qualifying competitions was adopted. The North has its games at Manchester, the South in London. It was decided, too, so as as to make the affair as comprehen- sive at could possibly be, that the amateur champions of Ireland and Scotland should be-naked-to-meat the representatives of the North and South of England.

The hearing was held behind closed doors in the law offices of Wilcox & Halling, at- EXCELLENT CUISINE.torneys for Mrs Cody, who have conducted her defence since Buffalo Bill filed his poti- tion at Barin City, the county seat of Big Horn county, Wyoming. At the time we were married," she said, *Colonel Cody was employed on the plains of Kansas as a teamster and shortly after ward became engaged -as a buffalo bunter for the railroad contractors on a division of the Union Pacific. He killed thousands of these animals which wêrs used by the graders.for meat,

In 1868 we moved to what was then Fort McPherson, Nebraska, where Colonel Cody became a scout for the government. We lived at Fort McPherson for several years. We were poor in those days, and I did what I could to assist in supporting the family by taking in sowing. Colonel Cody and I did not have serious trouble during our residence at Fort McPherson. The colonel went on the stage in 1874 and shortly after this he took us to Rochester, 2211 | N; Y., where we lived for four years.

AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but certain in action and oven in large doses is harmless. Laxatine being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messrs A. S. WATSON & Co. In 1893 we purchased our residence here in town. This was fixed up in good style and I prepared to welcome my husband

before she died.

Among other things written by Mrs Thorpe Arta) was the statement that bringing of the suit for divorce by hor father had broken her heart.

Mrs Cody denied that Colonel Powell, manager of Colonel Cody's Wyoming in terests, over came to her at Rochester, or any place, seeking a reconciliation between her and her husband, Mrs Cody told of Cody's homecoming on Christmas, 1901. She said he seemed glad to see her, and when he wont away Christmas night he bade her an affectionate farewell, kissing her as he stepped aboard the train,

This was the last heard from Colonel Cody, either by letter or by word of mouth, said Mrs Cody.

Under examination by Colonel H. S. Rideley, chief counsel for the plaintif Mrs Cody became hysterical and could scarcely Answer some questions.

In support of her accusation of infidelity against her husband, a deposition was made to-day by Louis F. Clark, who form orly worked on Colonel Cody's ranch near Cody, Wyo., regarding two visits of a woman press agent for the 'Buffalo Bill' show to the ranch in 1902, and gifts made her by Colonel Cody.

THE PERFECT HUSBAND.

BY AN APPRECIATIVE WIFE,

isn't overy man who will wash up, and attend to the home, when he returns tired from work. These were the words of an Englishwoman, in a chat with a representative of Northern Gossip, and, she added, my husband did more than that; he even washed my face, for I was too ill and weak to do it myself.

I had gradually sunk into a state of general debility, and over nino yeara suffered from various ailments as a result- suffered, in fact, until my curo by Dr Williams' pink pills. Eventually the troubles developed into a bad skin disease. I became so run down and helpless that I could not do anything in the way of house- work. I could eat nothing solid, nor could I obtain a good night's sleep. My husband called a gooth doctor, and oh, the bottles of medicino I took Shortly after the birtli of my little.girl, a friend called one day

when I was feeling even worse than usual, and she said, Why don't you try Dr Williams' pink pills?'

My little girl Dora, too, who has suffer- ed from weakness, has very greatly benefit- ed by taking the pills. What Dora wanted and I wanted was pure, new blood, and I'm sure that Dr Williams' pink pills for palo people make new blood,”
