MISSIONARY'S LONG JOURNEY TO CHRISTIANISE ESKIMOS.
PRINCE ALBERT, N, W.T., March 13,- Rev. Father Arsene Turquetil has begun a remarkable journey to keep a tryst with an Eskimo named Nyrimayok. He left St. Peter's Mission, at the northenmost point Athabasca, on or of Reindeer Lake, in aliout Jan. 1, and expects to reach Lake Garry, betweem Mackenzie and Keonatio, 66 degrees, north latitude, this month. There a conference will take place upon which depends the Christianisation of one of the largest tribes of Eskims on the continent, a tribe whose uncounted thous ande roam the wilds of the frozen north from Hudson's Bay to the Beaufort Sea. Over these strange people of the northland Chief Nyrimayok reigns, and his conversion to Christianity means the conversion of all his people. Nyrimayok sent word to Father Turquetil several months ago ask- ing him to meet the chief, and asking him to make his home among his tribe. Father Turquetil is 28 years of age, and a native of France.

ANTARCTIC SHIPS FOR SALE,
'Discovery' and the Relief Vessels
en the Market.
Since her return from the Antarctic the "Discovery has been lying in the East India Deck for sale. She is not yet sold. Anyone anxious for Polar exploration has now the wide choice of three ships, all veterans in ice work.
The relief ships of the expedition towards the South Pole, the Terra Nova" and the "Morning," have also been placed on the market by the Admiralty. The "Dis covery," of course, is the pick of the bunch. She is a new ship, and was designed and built for her work.
The Torra Nora" has a long record as a steam sealer, he is barque-rigged-neces- sarly, because should the engines broak down there are no dry docks in the Arctic and was built at Dundee in 1884, from whence she inade many successful voyages. The Morning" is the smallest vessel, but the oldest and most experienced. She is a Norwegian whaler, built there in 1871. When fitting out in London for the relief of the "Discovery," she attracted. great attention at the docks because of the "crow's nest " on her mainmast, perhaps the first seen in London since the whalers moved to Dundee.
.
There will be sold at the same time the 22.gun H.M. corvette "Havannah," built in 1811.
CONSPICUOUS SUNSPOTS.
During portion of February the sun presented the unusual spectacle of two great groups of spots, entirely distinct from each other, and each easily distinguishable by the unassisted sight.
One of these was the great group of Janu- ary 28 to February 11, at present making its third progress across the visible hemisphere
of the sun. It has now considerably fallon of from the enormous dimensions which it possessed at the beginning of February, but it still forms a magnificent group, stretching 'along soine twelve degrees of solar longi- tude, or ninety thousand miles, whilst ite greatest breadth is about forty-five thou sand miles. This great group, which is in the southern hemisphere of the sun, crossed the central meridian about noon ou March 3, and will reach the west limb on March 10, The other great group is in the northern hemisphere, and is even larger, being one hundred and ten thousand miles in length, and more than fifty thousand in breadth. It is, therefore, little, if anything, inferior to the southern group when at its greatest extent during the first week of February. This northern group came into view at the cast limb on March 1, and crossed the -central meridian on March 8, reaching the west limb on March 14.
Thus, whilst the sun throughout the whole of last year displayed only a moder-

A STRANG SUPERSTITION.
An Old Idol in Canton.
(From Our Correspondent.)
CANTON, April 8. It is well known that, situated some few
miles below Canton, on the river's bank, is the famous Polo temple. Some have sug gested that this temple was built and dedicated to the renowned Venetian trav
eller, Marco Polo, who spent more than twenty four years in China, and afterwards bolauded her power and glory to the as- tonished nations of the west. There is an image to his memory in the great temple to the Five hundred genii in Canton.
It Beams more probable, however, that the temple was dedicated to some forgotten Indian deity for the two Chinese characters used, are identical with those used to denote the ancient cult of India. Be this as it may, every spring, near Taingming, au ostentatious pilgrimage of Canton inla is made to this temple, to perform an act of special wording. urety
