movement was projected on the Great" Lakes of America toward the end of Tan dary which must be viewed in retrospect to appreciate its full significance. It means that owners of vessels have g own tired of having their property managed by unions, and aro resolved upon a change. For the past three or four years, says Engi neering, there has been a gradual enorosch- ment of union power until, a year ago, the owner was practically left without a personal representative aboardship. His property was absolutely managed while on the high sens by men who owed allegianco only to their own union, and the tuation was further aggravated, from the owner's standpoint, by the fact that the various unions aboardship were frequently quarrel- ling among themselves. The Seamen's Union controlled the wheelmen, watchmen, look-outs, and deck-hands, and was parti cularly jealous of it prerogatives. If a fireman was taken suddenly ill, no deck. hand could be asked to shovel coal. Firemen's Union controlled the firenon,- oilers, and water-tonders, and would porinis its members to do no more than was set down in the card. A the season of the year when the pru
dent and careful housewife replenishes her supply of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It is certain to be needed before the winter. is over, and results are much more prompt and satisfactory when it is kept at hand and given as soon as the cold is contracted and before it has become settled in the system. In almost every instance a sovere cold may be warded off by taking this remedy freely as soon as the first indication of the cold appears. There is no danger in giving it to children for it contains no harm- ful substance. It is pleasant to take--both adults and children like it. Buy it and you will get the best. It always cures. In several cases villages were surrounded and the inhabit- ants compelled to pay tribute to the

IxFUNTIES AS THE BLOOD,➡ We have seen hosts of letters from all sorts and conditions of people, in which the writers acknowledge the benefit they have received from Clarkes's Blood. Mixture, which as a curative agent cannot be too highly estimated, since it deanses and elcars the blood from ali impurities, and restores it to its normal condition. This is a good testimonial from the Family Doctor, the popular medical weekly, which goes on further to say: It is certainly the finest blood purifier that science and skill have brought to light, and we can with the utmost confidence recommend it to our subscribers and public generally,

They know that the word describes a Chinese festival, which occurs in the spring, and that it is connected with the worship at, or of, the graves. The most manifest sign of the approach of the day to the average resident, is the disappearance of one or more-of the domestics; or the non-appearance.

The bare mention of the word 'Athletic' in itself is sufficient to rouse the interest of the average Britisher. Small wonder, therefore, that the recreation ground at' Happy Valley was orowded with spectators this afternoon when the annual Athletic Sports under the auspices of the Victoria Recreation Club were successfully put in motion. Fortunately the weather this year was just the reverse to that experienced in 1904 (when the rain descended in torrents) for the day, though somewhat dull, was cool and pleasant. The recreation ground was decked with flags, the grand. stand being especially attractive looking, And the wants of the spectators and com petitors were well looked af er by a energetic committer.

It is this combination that is responsible for ail the good work that the Company has formance adds they are bound to go on improving. Effects of past criticism wore noticeable laat night in the production of One Suramer's Day, a pretty pastoral play which was staged with infinite tasto and with a completeness reflecting the greatest credit not only upon the actors and actresses but upon those workers who do not come within the palo of the limelight-the stage managers and those responsible for the dressing. There was studied unity amongst the players; actions were suited to words, and gestures were made where gestures were needed -- not, as is often the case with amateurs, where they are th-suited.
