Canon Barnett, speaking at Toynbes Half recently in The Boy from School to Work, presented a serious indictment of the boy of to-day.

In his opinion, school teaching was far too mechanical and the classes much too largo Unfortunately, the spirit of daring and emulation which marked all boys in sport could not be stirred up in mental pur- suits. Thus is was, he said, that so many sons of working men went in after life to

A Journalist's Death.

Mr Harold F. Pipor, who for some time past has been in the employ of the Hongkong Telegraph, died at the Govern ment Civil Hospital last night, after an operation for abscess on the liver. Mr Piper was a native of England and pom- menced his journalistic career in the Mid- lands. He first came to the Far E-stabout. 8 years ago and went to Shanghai as Sub- Editor of the North China Daily News. During the Boxer trouble Mr Piper acted as correspondent for an American newspaper,— and finally left Shanghai for the Straits.. In succession he filled positions on the Struts Icho and the Bangkok Observer, arriving in Hongkong during the autumn of last year. He then began to write for the Telegraph and continued in harness, despite his ill-health, until a few days ago, when he was removed to the hospital. Ho was 36 years of age when he died. The funeral is to take place to-morrow morning.

FOR ALL LIVER, KIDNEY AND HEMORRHOID TROUBLES.

RECOMMENDED BY THE WORLDS' FINEST PHYSICIANS.

AXATINE is the mildest aporient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but LA

certain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Laxatino being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are itritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messra A. S. WATSON & Co. This pres paration purifies the whole system through the. Slood, and thoroughly eliminates every poisonoxis matter from the body

from chest wounds, while, ag regards other wounds, the percentage of recoveries was larger from wounds in the head and ab. domen than from injuries to other

organs. This is attributed to the small calibre of

modern rifles, the percentages in the other Japanese armies being, it is belioved

about the same.

YOU MAY HAVE IT, AND NOT KNOW IT.

THE kidneys are intended by nature to drain off the surplus water and the body's impuritics. You know how well and strong and robust you feel when the kid. neys are working right. You feel right in overy way.

But how do you feel wlien the kidneys become clogged and diseased ?

Tired, miserable, sleepless, nervous, rest- less, back lame. and aching and weak- Can't stop can't stand, without pain; rheumatio, gouty, dizzy, weak, no appetite, etc.

These symptoms and a thousand others come from the impurities in the blood, which sick kidneys have not taken out of the body.

Doan's backache kidney pills tone and heal the kidneys, and enable them to take all these disease poisons out of the system. The medicine's offect is quick and sure; it does not set on the bowels, only on the kidneys and bladder.

The pills do one thing, and do it well. All the chief chemists and medicine- dealers sell Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, price 2/0 for 1 box, or 13/9 for 6 boxes; the medicine may be had, post free, on receipt of price, direct from the proprietors
