The appellant asserted that there was he obligation to reclaim, even after getting permission to reolain, but contend- ed that the documents gave him a vested right. The export and other evidence pro- duced by the respondents was against that contention, and went to show that the reclamation was required to be completed in six years and a final title obtained. It was common ground that the reclamation was never effected, therefore, if the experts exposition of the Chinese Law was sound the appellant's title had lapsed. At the date of the cession the rights possessed by the appellant were only these that he had against the Chinese government at that tiple. The evidence of the respondents' experts was to the effect that the rights of

Chinese government had passed away from him at the date ot the cession owing to the non-fulfilment of the /con- ditions attached to the reclamation license: The appellant's expert was not satisfactory; his grave inaccuracica of translation, taken in conjunction with his former reputation, made it dangerous to place reliance on his expert evidence. It was compulsory to sheng-fo' the land within six years; it was not necessary for the Chinese Govern- ment to enter land when the appellant failed to sheng-fo' (to put land on the tar register, or raise it from one tax to another) the land within the six years, for the land had. not passed out of the A billiard handicap, which has attracted. possession of the Government. From the expert evidence put forth by the responden's it would appear that at the time of the cession. the appellant had no legal or equitable claim, under the Chinese government, and this evidence is corroborated. The appell- ant had failed to establish his claim and the claim was rightly disallowed. The appeal, therefore, was dismissed.

A Fatal Collision.

The Puisno Judge reviewed the Ordin. ances dealing with the Convention, the definition of land, Constitution of the Court, and the powers exercised by the Ordinances. of occupation came to an end therefore, when the allotted time had passed and the condition imposed by the permit was unperformed. In such a case I can- not see that there was any necessity for any active steps on the part of the Chinese Government to cancel or avoid the docament of permission. It seems to mo that the right conferred by these documents having lapsed by effluxion of time the do- cuments themselves become more wasto papor having no value. If the documents of claim AS and AT are only voidable I am of opinion that the judgment appealed. from must be upbeld; if they are of no more effect than expired permits the appeal equally fails, for the documenta" of "olaim ceased on August 20, 1895, and confer on hith no right even to entry and conditional Occupation. The appeal should be dismiss

POPULAR LEGAL FALLACIES.

Catoh-Phrases that Lead

Astray.

In spite of the daily and weekly Press, and of the fact that the man in the street is necessarily better informed on many things than were his grandparente, Mr Frank H. Stevens suggests a doubt in Chambera'a Journal as to whether this multiplicity of knowledge does not tell for inaccuracy,

to Take, for instance, the phrase, Trespas Bera will

will be prosecuted,

We are all more or less familiar with this legend, for it is almost impossible to walk for many minutes in any part of the country without coming face to face with what lawyers have aptly termed a wooden liar. One might well conclude from this

The Bank of England has legally no power to refuse payme ; and if it had such power it would be a serious thing, for a Bank of England note is legal tender to any mount, and unless it were in fact as good as money, it would be impossible to carry on business.

But what the Bank will do is to delay as thereby giving the loser an opportunity of long as possible the payment of the note,

establishing, if he can, his title to it as against the person presenting it; but if the bank should refuse to pay a note on de mand, and the person presenting it should forthwith issue a writ for the money, the bank could have no defence to the notion.

This explains the words of Mra Evans, kill. of Tontardawe, Wales: Food yas ing me.

I sufford for twelve months,' said Mrs Evans, when seen at her home in Brecon Road, Pontardawe, by a Swansu Daily Post reporter, and I think that an attack of Influenza must have brought it on. After meals fits of giddiness would seize me, with acute pains in the stomach, When I drow my breath I could feel a sharp pain like a knife cutting into my back; if I stopped everything in the room seemed to go round.

Mrs Evans and Daughter, both Cured by Dr Williams' Pint: Pills.

keeping me alive. I grew to be a total wreck. Two first-class doctors gave me medicine, but nothing seemed to meet my needs until From the I tried Dr Williams' Pink Pills. first they gave relief, and in a very short. time I felt like another woman. And this great change as effected by only three bottles of the Pills.

'I am as well now na ever I was, and can enjoy almost any food without fear of pain or discomfort. My daughter suffered from anemia so acutely that she had to give up ber work (dressmaking) She used to feel drowsy, languid, weak, and nt fit for anything. In the morning she had awful fits of coughing. In spite of all we did, sho seemed to keep the same-miscrablé and without Chergy. She began Dr Wil- Kains Pink Pills, and from that time things grew brighter. After the first bottle-. ful the felt much stronger, and steadily improved, now she is back at work again.

Both Mrs Evans and her daughter were cured, though suffering from different com- plaints, because Dr Williams Pink Pills made new blood, and supplied strength to the stomach. Whaterer troubles arise from tou little blood, or blood that lacks purity, they can cure. The genuine pills bear Dr Williams' name; substitutes are useless. Dr Williams' Medicine Co., Hol- born-viaduct, London, send a bottle post

irce for 2s. d. Anemia, Bilc, Consum

Vitus' tion, Indigestion, St.

Dance, Rheumatism, Kidney Disease, have been oured repeatedly, as instances already published have proved. They give strength to everyone especially to wonen, who know why they need new blood more often than their husband and brothers.
