He had played just two hours, and putt ing his luck machine in his pocket, ho buttoned his coat and left the building.
Old players hore admit that they can neither understand the machine nor Mc Wall's play, and are of opinion that this morning'a experience would have broken him if he had played any known system."
I saw Me Wall at his hotel to-day, and he told me how he came to invent his
machine,
Ever since bo was a boy, he says, he has been interested in the mathematical laws of chance, and 15 years ago he got an iden which he believed would noutralise, if not beat, the turn in favor of the bank at roulette.
He has constantly experimented with his 1876 theory, but it was not until 12 months ago that he considered he had met with success, His plau, roughly stated, consist in ♦♣ persons playing simultaneously against the bank on a preconcerted plan, each movo of the players being decided beforehand.

for his release on £1,00 bail were con plated by noon, but the dismissal of a prisoner from the fortress is never an easy matter. It was live o'clock before M. Gorky, having doffed the hateful prison dress, could put on his own clothes and was allowed to pass out from the gloomy walls of the fortress to the semi-public enclosure around the Cathedral, to which visitors are admitted.
5'lic place was full of brilliant sunshine, and the erstwhile prisoner paused on the threshold of thé gáọl to fill his lungs with thecrisp and pure air, and gaze for a moment at the blue sky. Then, as if invigorated, he started off at a brisk towards the exit.
paco But he had not gone far böfore he was hailed by his friend M. Pistnitsky, who is his publisher in Russia.
Greetings were exchanged, warm but bref, for at home, two miles away, wore awaiting him his wife and little son. He had been allowed to see his wife on soveral ccasions, but each time they were soparat. ot by double prison bars, with a gaoler seated between them and were, of course, unable to discuss even Family affairs.
Impatient to embrace his wife and child, Gorky, with his friend, hurried to the gate. way and prepared to enter the cab that was in waiting. But at that moment a couple. of men in civilian drees touched him on the shoulder. We are very sorry,' one of them said, but we must ask you to accom- pany us. I am an official of the Okhrannon Videlenie (the special bureau for the safety of the Emperor and the State:)
M. Gorky turned pale. It was only with the utmost difficulty that he could restrain himself. It seemed so hard. But, re cognising the uselessness of protest, he followed the officials to their currisge, and drove off with them to the much-dreaded Pushin House on the banks of Moika River
M. Piatnitsky followed in the cab which was to have taken his friend to home and freedom, and saw him disappear within tha gates, which are scarcely less feared and detested than those of the fortress he had.
just left. Then, like a true friend, he hastened to the nearest telephone, to warn Madame Gorky of the disaster that had come so inopportunely, and drove off to the chief
bureau.
