The among the best books of the novel is devoted to the question of a mur- deress' conscience, and whether a person who commits a capital crime can over for got it and in that forgetfulness find solace. to Oxford. His meagre allow- goen is insuficient for his needs arid he oversteps the line drawn. In a stormy #cene the grandfather threatens to withdraw him from the University, Harry's Bister (the 'Daughter of Jael') drenda the blow for her brother's sake, for, knowing the

She does so and Lady Ridley vividly depicts the

scene.

Her act remains unsuspected and Harry is saved. She devotes herself wholeheartedly to her brother and until he marries her life is comparatively her happy. The remembrance of crime fades away; but after Harry's marriage it returns in force. She has long since decided not to marry her crime was too great. However, she meets a man who loves her and she reciprocates his affection; She wishes to lay bare her past, but dreade the task. He insists that the past shall be dead for both of thein and she agrees.

Until an old fame of her husband's comes between then they are. happy, but the shadow that has crossed their path alinost result in the Daughter of Jael again committing marder. She is frantic at her husband's noglect and decides to remove the cause. She is spared that crime, how- ever, by the death of the woman. Lady Ridley's style is good, and 'A Daughter of Jael' is a most readable book. Our copy came from Messrs Kolly and Walsh.

during the coming month. The last time this happened was in August, 1903, and previous to that at the beginning of Jan. 19 2, from which dates it will be seen that the phenomenon recurs at regular intervale The present occasion is noteworthy in that it happens in March and at the time of Vernal Equinox, Venus is bright now because “she is comparatively near to the earth in actual miles, and is coming nearer; but if looked at through a telescope of moderate power, it will be seen that Venua bas now only half a disc, appearing in shape like the moon at first quarter, and, though the phate is becoming smaller, the diminu- tion is compensated by her larger apparent diameter and increased brightness, due to her nearness. The balance will be struck, as has been said, on March 21, when not a third of her illuminated half will be pre- sented to us, but that fraction will be brilliant.

determined. The question then arose as to which of these two parties, the owners or the time charterpre, were liablo to pay the damage incidental to the loss of the “Fortung.” The District Court and the Circuit Court of Ap peals found in the Boston Company's favour, but the Supreme Court of the United States reversed this finding, giving judgment for the owners, The Boston Company paid the claim, and next proceed. ed in this country against the British and Foreign Marine Company for its proportion of the amount, with interest. The case was heard in the King's Bench Division, before Mr Justice Bigham, in May last year, when judgment was given against the Boston Company. In January this year the case

went before the Court of Appeal, and judg, ment was given on the 6th inst. confrming the decision in the Court below. The Boston Company have therefore again been unsuccessful, and it would seem that an appeal to the House of Lords is probable. There are so many chartering, shipowning, and underwriting points in the case, gome of which do not appear to have been perfectly cleared up yet, that a final decision by the highest Court could hardly fail to be of material guidance to sil the classes of business men concerned.
