SCIENCE NOTES.

In 1880 the population of the United States was 60,155,783 and the number of telephones, according to an ab tract of a recent consus bullet ir issued by the Govern ment, of all kinds was 64,319, giving an average of 929 persons per telephone the population of continental United States in 1902 is estimated at 78,576,435, and the number of telephones operated in that year was 2,315 297, giving an average of 34 per- sma per telephone.

Tho statement recently made to the effort that the failure of American to receive any of the Nobel prizes way. a proof of their lack of proficiency in experimental science is controverted by an editorial writer in The National Geographic Magazine, who says: Thorenson is not lack of appreciation abroad of what we are doing in this country, but the neglect of Americans to apply for the prizea, owing to misunderstanding of the manner in which

the awards are made. In the awarding of 1376 | prizes only those persons are considered who are formally nominated as candidates by some institution, college, or scientific so- ciety of rank and character. Not a single American, we are informed, has yet been presented for consideration, and the in- CARDENS, pression abroad is that Americans are not

TO. 1. STEWART TERRACE, Thenient, says Populu Mechanics, The heat produced will not only be painful to the horse, but may seriously injure him. One of our subscribers recently called to relate his experience in driving on an asphalt pavement. He was riding horseback in company with a friend, when the two en- gaged in a friendly race After they bad gone about a mile, his friend's horse threw shes. Going back to the place the rider dismounted and picked up the shoe, which was so hot that it not only severely blister- ed his hand, but did not cool so it could be taken up for several minutes. At each step the horse slips a little, and this constant rapid sliding of the metal shoe, under weight, upon the sand contained in the pavement, generated a high degree of beat.

-digging of the biggest irrigation project in Undersigned has received instruc

America, excelled only by one in India and one in Egypt. I expected to see an army of men with shovels, and saw not one shovel. Instead,

monstrous arms which dipped down, took a huge bite out of the earth, rose slowly and -dropped the dirt to one side. Dipping and biting, these three machines advance just about 100 fest a day, leaving in their wake a ditch which is the size of a small river, 60 feet wide and from 12 to 20 foot deep. This ditch begins at the river and crawls in a cur- ving course something over a score of miles intathecountry. The biggest irrigation ditch on the continent is simplicity itself. There is nothing complicated about an irrigation plant. It's just an old fashioned mill-race on a big scale. You tap the river at a high level, run your ditch along that level, with just the slightest drop that will make water ke water How at all. Then from the big ditch you run smaller lateral ditches, and from these still smaller oner, till every few acres has its little rivulet. The ditch at Calgary will supply an area of about 150 by 50 miles and water nearly 2,000,000 acres-more ter ritory than is included in some Eastern States. When the work is done--but what irrigation will do for a semi-arid country is an old story. And yet, just the elements of it may bear retelling.

Farming with irrigation is as different. from ordinary farming as hothouse garden- ing is from raiding wheat. Farming with irrigation comes very close to being an >>peration in chemistry. You have your suu light, you have your soil, in fixed quantities and of known chemical constituents. You add your water in quantities as needed. And if you wish, you can put fertilizing elementa, salts of potash, for example, in your water, and them farming is a mattor of chemistry indeed. Aud the results to the farmer are as different as a chemist's operations must be from the results to a farmer who lets the caprices of the weather govern the supply of one of his principal -ingredients. If a piece of ground which

lopends for water on rain will raise 100- bushels the same pieco irrigated will raise 500. Twenty acres irrigated will support a family in ample comfort, and forty acres irrigated is as largo a farm as one man can well mannge.

But after all the biggest irrigation pro-1805. ject on the American continent is merely When one seeks for the a big ditch. broader significance of this big irrigating a project licre on the Western plains of Canada, one worders at first why such work should be done at all, Canada has literally millions of acres of fertile land which does not need irrigation, Canada is so rich and prodigal with fertile and that she gives it away-160 acres to any man who will merely settle on it and in- prove it, The Canadian Pucitic Railroad, is almost equally rich in land. It has mil- lions of acres which it sells ut $1 and So an acre. Why, then, this costly irrigation uf wasto land, as if land were scarce The explanation made by the people here which may be true is this: The Canadian and the Canadian Pacific Government Railroad are absolutely sure of Canada's future. They are preparing for the time when their free land will all be gone.

The situation, compared with that of the United States, is like this: Winnipeg, with about 60,000, is Canada's Chicago; Van- couver, with about half as many, is Cana da's San Francisco. In all the vast country between those two-it takes three days to cover on a railroad train-there is but one town of over 10,000 people. It is as if we at home had no Denver, no Omaha, no Minneapolis, no one of a store of cities That in a fow decades Canada will have its Denver, its Omaha, its Kansas City, is as certain as the co-operation of Government, railroad and a tremendous stream of eager immigrants that justle each other for an early chance, can make it.-Mark Sullivan in the Boston-Transcript.

THE LEAOVE COMPETITION,

THE CHINA MAIL.

The defeat of the Army Ordnance Corps by Kowloon and Craigongower's win at the expense of the Police have added increased interest to the League competition. As the table at present stands the Army Ord nauce and Craigengower are level with 30 points for 17 matches, while Kowloon is third with 39 points for 16 matches. The premiership for the season, however, lies between Hongkong 'A' and the three teams mentioned above. Should Hong. kong 'A' win the remainder of their matches they will win the competition by one point, and the same remark applies to Kowloon, as one of the games still to be played is Kowloon against Hongkong. A. On paper Kowloon should win, but in the face of the defeats inflicted by weakor teatas, it is quite on the cards that Hongkong A will omerge from the contest victorious.

Craigongower have only one match to play. viz., against Hongkong A, and victory would place them near the top of the list. A victory for this team would be very popular, for almost throughout the entire season their cloven has been the

Kowloon have yet to meet Hongkong 'A' and the Police, both of which matches are open, although in the game against the Police Kowloon should just about win.

Before half-time was reached the West Kents scored again, Ogle finding the not. second half commenced with the Club three goals in arrears, and a fourth goal was added before its close by Barrowa. In this spoil the Hongkong Club, capecial. ly in the forward division were consider- ably weaker than their opponents, and put up a very poor game. The back division were not up to usual form, although they defended well and gave the forwards the ball often. The game payed by the West Kents was a good one, but we fancy they will be defeated when they meet one of the Naval teams in the sci-final.

The ground was wet and the ball greasy, despite which good footwork was shown by both teams. The Naval Yard opened the scoring, but the Albions," who wore playing much the better game, remained attacking and notched two goals in succession, gaining a lend of one by half- time. None of the wounds were serious, however. It appeared to be the object of the sergeant's assailants to blind him, as mos; of the wounds were in the vicinity of the eyes. Finally, the ser. geant was rendered insonsible, and it ap peated that the four men then dragged the body along the road and threw it into a deep ditch, Some time later a European constable, passing along the road, heard groans and on investigating found the ser. geant and carried him to the police station: Metical attendance was summoned and eu on the sergeant being revived he detailed the occurrence. Evidence was led.

At the conclusion of the case for the Crown the Attorney General requested that the case against the third man should be withdrawn. Through an oversight on the part of the police in neglecting to have him identified the ovidence was not strong enough to convict.

The Chief Justico agreed and directed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty, which
