The drawing power is for the present to be steam, and for this purpose two engines have been imported at a cost of R7,500 oach. On each side of the engine are two large wheels, four feet in diameter, and having a breadth of ten inches and fitted with road grips. These ongines are capable of only covering nine miles an hour, which speed is.. I believe, not to 540 be exceeded, and is quite fast enough to astisfy the most exacting traveller. The report states that at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday last, a white painted launch steamed up to where the fishing junks were lying and sent a boat manned by ten men ashore. Some of the crew wore arm- ed with revolvers and going to the four fighing junks separately ordered their
owners to learn them and go on shore. This the fishermen did, not being prepared to resist the armed men, and the launch then took the four junks in tow and steam ed away with thems in the direction of Chek-wan. Nothing more has since boon seen of her or of the missing junks and the water police are busy Investigating the matter.
It is considered likely that the junks wore seized for the non-payment of some duen by either the Chinese officials or an influential private individual.

AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but certain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Laxatino being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messrs A. S. WATSON & Co. A new British invention in footwear promises to exercise a vast influence on the boot and shoe industry,' saya The American Inventor. Many attempts have been made a shoe at one time or another to produce with removablo soles and feels, but by va. rious reason none have proven satisfactory. But a British firm) appears to have solved the problem in producing a shoe that has all the appearance and merit of an ordinary well-made shoe, but so constructed that the heel and sole can be easily taken off and new ones put on. The advantages of such a shoe are obvious, and the most striking feature of the patent is its absolute simplicity. A factory for tlio manufacture of there shoes is in active operation at Leeds, England, and by the enthusiastic way in which it is spoken of in the British press it has evidently met with popular approval.!
