LONDON LETTER.
(From Our Correspondent.)
LONDON, Jan. 27. There has just been issued an inter- esting report by a Royal Commission on our coal supply, and it is comforting to learn we have still enough coal in sight to last us for another four hundred years, even if our population should increase to 135,000,000 and our aznual consumption to 600 million tons, From the progress of invention it is safe to assert that long before that time
we shall be burning water. The vast

NOTICE.
The most enterprising of catchpenny dailies is now the venedable Times, During the last week end it has actually condescented
to publish feuillenton, an unfinished novel by the lato Lord Beaconsfield, The Times theory is that after the disastrous elec- tion of 1880, the noble Earl started to take " humourous
revenge on Mr. Gladstone by making him the hero of novel, and that he selected the name of Joseph Toplady Falconet as a thin disguise for the personality of William Ewart Gladstone. It may be noted that Gladstone is in Scots, Gledstone, and that a gled is a hawk or falcon: But the author makes his horo rise from a Clapham Common family of mid- Victorian protestants, and this rather suggests Thomas Babbington Macaulay. celebrated the late Sic
Andrew Clark, expressed the firm opinion that constipation was the cause of one half of the ailments from which women and girls suffer. It fills the blood with impurities, robs the system of energy, causes piles, headache, biliousners, skin eruptions, and a host of other disorders. For these disorders, and for their root cause (constipation), Bile Beans are un- equalled.
Glouce-
Mrs S. Williams, of Longhope, ster, England, has proved this. For fully twenty years." she says I was a martyr to constipation. It brought on piles and biliousness, robbed me of appetite and onergy, and made my life a burden to me. Many a weary day have I spent weighed down wi b a feeling of utter wretchedness, and not caring whether I lived or died. Doctors Yes I tried several, but no amount of doctoring seemed capable of affording me the slightest relief and by degrees I grew weaker and wesker,

Now they will release Maxim Gorky, the young man they dare not hang, and will very quietly hang a few others. Mr Sharp pointed out that the mus probandi was very important to the case and it lay on the defendant. Tu reply to the statement of claim the defendant admitted the facts contained therein, but plended mierepresentation. The defen- dant's case was that he was induced to enter into the agreement by misrepresenta- tion that the houses were let at that time for 3658 por month and as a corollary to that he had to deny that he inspected the property before signing, for it was com mon ground that four out of the six were unoccupied. At that time the two houses let were bringing in $190 per month as rent for both. Mr Sharp contended that after having inspected the houses-and there could be little doubt on that point- the defendant could have no ground for his contention of misrepresentation. If his Lordship believed that defendant inspected the property it would be the end of the
case.
The Chief Justice-A cursory examina- tion would not be sufficient.
Mr Sharp-Surely if he went through Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 it would be sufficient to show whether they were occupied or not? He could not go throught the houses and not know whether they were occupied or not. I attach limited importance to the handwriting on the agreement--the added
words-and shall not ask for a definite

Coincident with rumours that the Go. vernment intends to dissolve Parliament early in the coming session comes another. report that it is intended to stop further importation of Chinese coolies in South- Africa.
The discovery of a means of metamor phosing radishes into potatoes has been made in so solemn a place as the Academy of Sciences, Paris,' says The American In- ventor. M. Molliard takes a very young radish, "Pasteurizes" it in a certain way, and it grows up into a fiae potato. More solentifically, the young radish is cultivated in a glass retort, after a process invented by Pasteur, in a.concentrated solution of glucose. Starch then. develops plentifully Lord Toynham, presiding at a meeting in the cells of the radish, which swells out, of a big Rand company, yesterday publicly loses its popperiness, and acquires practical-announced his fear that such was the case, ly the consistence, favor, and especially and the rumour caused depression in Kaflira the nutritive properties of the potato.' on the Stock Exchange.
