BULLETS WITHOUT THEIR
BILLETS.
While millions of missiles are being hurled against each other by the mighty armies of Russia and Japan, writes. Mr Frank Scudamore, the well-known war correspondent, is an article entitlca Bul- lets Without their Billete, in Cassell's Saturday Journal,' it is interesting to recall some of the many marvellous fustanoce of
from death by mon struck apparent cscape ly in a vitol part. Here are some instança that have come under my own observation in different campaigns :——
The night before the battle of Ginnis, fought on the Nile in 1880. Sir Archibald Hunter to give him his present title), with two brother officers, was watching from the walled pic of a ruined water wheel-the- movements of a body of Darvish horseman. The aperturo in the wall through which they gazed was do narrow that the three were forced to stand close one bahind another, while they observed tho Dervishes through their field-glasses. And this is what happened. A bullet from the Dervishes (who soon spied them out) struck the lens of the front officer's glass, pierced it, passed through his eye and his head, killing him; passed then through the man next him-Colonel Hackett-Thompson, of the Camerons and then entered the body of Archibald Hunter just above the heart, where it remains to this day.
It must be a painfu reminder mentally as well as physically to General Hunter. 10. know that he is wearing in his body the ball that killed one comrade and badly. wounded another.
At the battle of Atbara, on April 7, 1898, I came across a wounded Highlander, who was sitting propped against the side of a Dervish ride pit, beside a dead donkey, and severni dead Dervishes. From the amount of blood that stained his cloth. ing, I deemed the poor fellow badly hurt, but,had little time to do more than
Anotions.

Lord Kitchener himself had what sold era call a lucky let-off at the re-taking of Tokar in 1889, where ho was in command of the Khedive's forces. In the middle of the battle a bullet struck him in the thros a mere fraction of an inch from the jugular vein, and ledged in the muscles of the neck. There it remained, despite the efforts of the surgeons, for some time, until one-day at dinner Colonel Kitchener banced to swallow a fly, which produced a violent fit of coughing. In the midst of this tho Dervish maissilo (a heavy Remington ball) dropped into his soup plate.

The excitement occasioned by meeting those ships had hardly died away when, at 4.30, another and much larger feet hove in sight. That there was no score made by the West Kents is due entirely to F. Kow, the goalkeeper. From the start the West Kents attacked and had a shot at goal shortly after the commancement, just missing the post. After steady play the regimental team's forwards worked down into a good position, boating the Hongkong Club's backs, and with only Kow to beat one of them shot, Kow saved in excellent style. A few mini. utes later Kew was culled upon again, and as he caught the ball he was charged by a West Kent player, but he managed to get the ball clear. · The West Kents played a fast grine, but their passing was too long and sometimes very erratic. When alcoting at goal, too, they were not in first class form, although once or twice stinging shots were sent in. In their
forward division the Royal West Kents have a quintette of good men, especially the two wings. The Club, on the other hand, wore weak in the forward line. They pissed very well, but the defence of the Royal West Kente was too strong for them to break through, and each pro- mising rush up-field ended in the ball being sent down again. Towards the end of the gaie, after the Olub's goal had been severely bombarded but unsuccess- fully, the Club carried the ball to the opposite end, where a shot was made at goal. The goalkeeper fisted but the ball went high in the air and Pearde sent it into the goal when it came down. The referee decided it was no goal, as the latter player handled the ball. The game finished up a draw, neither side having scored.
