UNITED KINGDOM'S COAL SUPPLY.
LONDON Jan 25.
The report of the Royal Commission on the coal supplies of the United Kingdom, 1ued to day onlculate the available re muurcos if the proved » coalfelda ab 100,000,000,000 tons, which at the present itterenalog rate of output will last about 450 göre, Commissioners anticipate that
wing to physical considerations, the rate of the increses of the output will soon be slower and will be followed by a period of stationary output and then by a gradual Recline which will prolong the duration of the resources.
The report also says It is interesting to note that while the output of the United Kingdom has little more than doubled since 1870, the output of Germany has in- crossed fourfold and that of the United Statos tenfold. The competition of Ameri can coul thus far has only affected Great Britain's distant markets, but fears are ex- pressed that the American Prope
will
eventually outstrip the present demands and force America to establish a large coal export trade in order to dispose of her: aurplus.

THE Undersigned has received instruc
of the Tear. Big-lim ed and muscular, Ttions to fall by Public Auction,
standing over six feet high, he has the re- putation of being harsh to his subordinates and extremely passionate,
The picture is doubtless overdrawn, for M. de Witto is well hated. For one thing he is only remotely Russian, for his father was of Dutch descent, and he himse'f' was born at Tillis. For another he does not forgot a slight. It is not so very long ago that the Grand Duke Michael administered to M. do Witto a public affront, cutting him dead at a State ball, M. de Witte did not appear to notice the insult, but at a private audience of the Tsar le tendered his resignation. Russia, always financially in a tight place, was just then in a tighter -corner than ever. The Tsar intervened, and a Grand Duke, for the first time in Russian history, apologised to a commoner for it was not until January 19), "that Sergius Julius Witte was created, a count and enabled to interpolate the coveted de' into his name. The Tsar could not afford to offend the man who was spending forty millions sterling on the Siberian Railway and had borrowed four hundred millions from France; but the incident did not make M. de Witte any more of a favourite.
ENGLAND'S GREATEST
TALKERS.
and
Who are the greatest talkers in England The Prime Minister heads the list at present. In Parliament there are only half a dozen other men who have talked half as much as Mr Balfour. According to The Premier Parliamentary Record Review,' an interesting little booklet com piled in the Press Gallory, and published by Mesars Howarth & Co., of Clapham, Mr Balfour spoke 317 columns of Hansard during last session. Mr Austen Chamber- Jain 287, Sir Henry Campbell-Bauuerman 200, Mr Wyndham 180, and Mr Arnold Forater 169. Mr Lloyd George's ́ record was 166 columns, and Mr Gibson Bowles, nearly as talkative, spoke four columus less.
Next in order were Sir Charles Dilke and Mr Winston Churchill with 157 and 143 respectively. Mr Lyttelton with 132, Mr Asquith with 125, Mr Lough with 110, and Mr John Redmond with 109 Nobody else spoke 100 columns of Hansard in the House of Commons. Even Lord Hugh Cecil spoke only 32,
There is only half as much talking in the Lords as in the Commons. Lord Laps. downo heads the list with 166 colunins, Earl Spencer boing second with 100. They are the only two peers whose columns run into three figures, Lord Salisbury and the Duke of Marlborough' tying for third, place with 82.

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail stenmor sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and Gorman in about 28 or 30 days.

That would have to be the case if this explanation was to be accepted,
Looking at the present compradore prices and comparing them with the market prices which ruled during 1904 we find that a very substantial increase has been made. For in stance, roast beef and hoef steak averaged between 17 and 18 cents per lb. during 1904
compradère now charges 20 cents, an increase of 14 per cent. Soup meat has increased in like per centage, while fillet of beef shows'an increase of something like 23 per cent. Even allowing that a tax of five per cent. had been imposed the compradore still receives a profit of 17 per cent, more than he did last year. On mutton 15 per cent; additional is charged; shoulder of mutton is 24 per cent dearer than last year, Poultry shows an advance of from ten to. twenty per cont. while other commodities have in like manner been raised.
All this is at the expense of the consu. mer, the compradore gets the profit, or a large share of it.
The demand for cattle during 1904 was steady and met with ample supplies. The total number of cattle slaughtered in the Colony was 30,829; sheep and goats, 23,730; swipe, 181,046 grand total 236.611.

This tendency, although not so serious as suggested by the quoted observation, is nevertheless such as to cause trouble to engineers. Discussing the subject, the Railway Age says —
We knew before, and scarcely know more now, that rails creep with the direction of traffic except on heavy grades; that trestle" and unstable embankments are favourable to the creeping of raile; that rails creep more under fast traffic or a heavy traffic than they do under a elw Or a light
traffic.

This is a view so largely taken in the discussion that the observer must bé im. pressed by it, and the cure resolves itself merely into a better form of track con struction. It must be many years before any great improvemont in method can take place, but with so many criticisms of our prevailing forms-short raila, isolated sup. ports, inefficient spikes, and insuficient. splices--there would seem to be a growing sontiment for the greater stability which will attach to a continuously supported

WHEN IT IS TOO LATE
FOR ORDINARY MEDICINE TO HELP, DR WILLIAM PINK PILLS CAN CURE
I
ANMMIA.
HAD begun taking medicine too late. Despite my doctor's skill I thought to be a Hfelong invalid,'
Mrs Hellyer, 28, Park-place, Gillingham, England, thus described her case at the age of nineteen. Anamia,
The Wouth Scourge, had taken hold upon her. In spite of everything done for me,' she continued, life was a perfeet misery. I was continu. ally in fainting fits, and could not bear the sight of food. I had terrible headaches and could not sleep. I felt to here no life in me, and my whole body seemed to be. without blood..
I became such a wreck of my former self that everybody thought I was past recovery. I was so wonk that I had to be carried from one room to another. I cor- tainly never expected to live to have a home of my own, and I feared my
MARRIAGE MUST BE POSTFONED, for I couldn't marry while a hopeless in- valid.'
That is what Anemia makes of many young women. There is only one cure for it-New Blood. Dr Williams' Piol Pille make now blood, and that is why they care Anemia. Their first effect is on the Appe tite. The sufferer begins to eat, and is able to get good out of food. By degrees the tired, worn system picks up strength, and the weary invalid grows strong, plump, and 708y, as Mrs Hellyer has dono.
Reading of a young girl, who suffered as I had, being cured by Dr Williams' Pink Pills, I resolved to try them myself,' she said, and I seemed to pick up even beforg I had finished the frst of the four bottles purchased. Before I had taken them all I completely lost my weariness and could do a good day's work again. You see,' Mrs Hellper added, that what I wanted was new blood, for Anemia was the rule cause of my trouble. My friends have told me, and I can quite believe, that onlinary medicine cannot make new blood. But Dr Williams' Pink Pills can, for I know they gave it to me.'
