This year they showed a balance of $1,889,76 sa against $310 last year, and the. balance was an absolutely correct one. Everything had been written down to its lowest value and they really had that much money in hand. The billiar earnings had been more than last year, due to the bolding of one or two handicaps. building read by Mr Graham. An anony« hows member had offered madals for the best papers on the duties of engineers, and they hoped as many engineers as possible would send in papers on the subject. They wanted to keep up the engineering side of the Institution as much as possible, though primarily it was a social club. The annual dance was a decided success, with not quite so much profit as last year, but a dance was not the thing to give for the purpose of making profit. He thought the dance should be an annual institution. The adoption of the report and stateme of Bocounts was carried on the motion Of Mr R Mitchell seconded by Mr McLachlan
The Chairman proposed Mr N. Mumford; as president of the association for the com ing year. Mr Mumford had been a member of the association since its formation and as he was leaving the Colony he desired to honour him. Mr Mumford's election wea seconded by Mr E. O. Murphy and carried unanimously
The Chairman and Mr J. Lambert were re-elected vice-presidents and Mr TUW. Robertson Hon Teasurer. The following wore elected to the Committee by ballot Messta E. O. Murphy, W. A. Cruke, J. But instead of -crossing the strata in a practically vertical position we found them almost, or quite, horizontal. This increased the labor of perforation and required enormona suma of money to make the cof of the tun- nol secure. The rock was not so solid or cohesive as it would have been if the ex cavation had penetrated vertical strata. The geologists told us that we should cut counter very little water on the southern, or Italian, side of the tunnel. The fact was, however, that we met grent streams CURIOS. IVORY WARES, and best of water. From August, 1900, to the pre-quality of China Grass Cloth and Chinese
Embroiderios. sent time, no less than 1,022 liters à second have been pouring from the south end. The geologists also told us that we shouid probably find troublesome streanas at Kilo- meter 5, on the north side of the mountain: It was just here that the rock was perfect- ly dry.
The pressure on the roof of the tunnel
is very much greater than it would have been if the rock strata had been vertical. half mile long the In one stretch about a pressure was so great that no means we lind hitherto used were adequate. Largo tree- trunks put in for supports were broken. Wo finally introduced many steel pillars: supporting a steel vaulting, with which we lined the roof. This difficulty was over- -come only after six months of dangerous work, in which our averago advance in digging was only twenty-five centimeters a day, instead of five and one half meters. Neithor had we been led to expect the almost intolerable heat we encoun- tered. We had been told that the maxi- mum temperature at the depth of the excavation would probably be 107 F. This Fould be bad enough, but not intolerable. But suddenly we renched a point in the work were the temperature arose to 131" Science is unable to explain the phenomo- non. The refrigerating plant was made ade- quate for this new dithculty and we managed to maintain the temperature at about 77. Then suddenly the temperature fell to its original level. We are wholly unable to explain those very rapia and en. ormous changes in the temperature.
These wore the chief difficulties that compelled the tunnel company to ask for an oxtension of the contract time, and an additional appropriation. The work is now proceeding in a satisfactory manner, and we have no doubt that the first tunnel and the lower part of the second tunnel will be completed ja contract time. The first tunnel will be opened to trafic on April 30, 1900, and the company, if neces sary, will push the work on Sundays and holidays to have everything ready on that date.'

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
