ACCOUNTANT AND CLERK,

GORKY'S NEW PLAY,

An Attack on the "Clanses.'

After an interval of several months, Ma- zim Gorky has reappeared on the literary battle-ground with a new comedy drama which, more than any previous play of his, is a challenge to, an assault upon, the cul- sured classes, AK distinguished from the masses. It is entitled Dachnike (Summer Cottagere), a figurative and symbolic title. The

drama does not deal with temporary affairs and oircumstances of cottagers enjoy- ing their vacations in the country. Gorky applies the term to the whole so-called intellectual element, which he ridicules and savagely satirizes.

The play has just been produced in St. Petersburg, and while the dramatic critics comment on it

on it adversely they admit that, in the present state of public

opinion, the theatre-going public rather likes it. There is much preaching in it, exactly of the kind generally heard in the press apropos of the zemstvo agitation and the revival of interest in the peasant and bis needs,

and all the speeches are

warmly applauded.

The critic of the Novoye Fremya, who anys the play is an unsuccessful work of a plainly talented writer, characterizes it 1376 further as follows:

The fundamental idea of the drama is an follows: Our intelligencia foeble, im- potent, timid, useless, has lost all organic connection with the nation. All of its members desire to live, to be happy, to de something, but none of them really lives,

PRICES VERY MODERATE. 8, D'AGUILAR STREET, HONGKONG. Hongkong, October 20, 1904. 1886

The are many incidents and episodes in the play, but there is no definite, vital con- tral theme. There is some love making and an attempt at suicide, but the main interest of the scenos lies in the exposure of the triviality and futility of the life of these *intelligent' people.

The critic of the Norosti, friendly to Gorky, complains nevertheless of the in- justice of the picture. There are such characters, he says, as the dramatist has

painted, but they are not typical of Russian culture. Besides, futility may be due to external conditions and is not neccssarily

with corruption.

NEW YORK, January 1.- The New York Times to-night is being issued from its new building in Times Squard, a structure which has been referred to by exports as one of the notable architectural triumphs of the world. In recognition of this con tribution to the architectural beauty of New York the city govermaent some time ago named the district from Forty-second Street North for seven blocks along Broadway and Seventh Avenue 'Times Square.'

The occupancy of the new building by the New York Times began at midnight. Tast night, and the occasion was celebrated by an elaborate lisplay of fireworks from the observatory of the building, more than 400 feet above Broadway.

The moving, including the thirty linotype innclines brought from. 32 Park Row to Times Square, over a distance of three ballee, begun after midnight. A force of 150 oxpert machinists accomplished the work without the slightest hitch or delay, and to-night the same machines were set ting up the paper that did similar work lifting more entier, three miles away. The building is the city's tallest stucture. Szosa base to top, being thirty-one stories, with un extreme height of 476 feet.

It was about this time that we heard of Mr Johnstone's mishap. Poor fellow he is always breaking himself up. Jimmy wanted to fly for one of the stretchers, bat we were relieved to see he did not want it. A little after four o'clock the day began to darken, and Jimmy remembering his best girl declared we must make for home without delay. He wanted his beauty sleep. Punctually at hali-past nine that night we walked into Government House, and after I had got rid of my things went up to pay our respects to our genial host.
