An Old Foreign Office Story,

Henry W. Lucy, wrote to the Sydney Morning Herald, in December, followa :-Reading the Diary of Henry Greville

just out, I was abrook, by an entry under date: May 23, 1868. The Liberals, at the time in Opposition, had made an assault on the Government in the House of Commons, and were badly besten. Thereupon Grevillo writes:

All ono can hope is that a sweet are the uses of adversity the Liberal party may learn a lesson and perceive that as long as all their

Animosi and jealousies continue they may be good for all factious pur- posés, but powerless for those of a good, enduring, or even a possible Government. This slipshod writing suggests what is the fact, that this is not the diary of the famous Greville, long time Clerk to the Council, whose diary is a priceless contribution to English history, Henry was his younger brother. The point of the passage is all the same, illustrating the axiom about history repeating itself, and there being nothing new under the sun. The lines penced more than 46 years, might have been written at any time within the past ten Fears.

Happily the cloud has now lifted, and there is to-day nearer approach to cordialTMTMTM "co-operation amongst lenders of the Liberal party and the sections they represent than there has been since Mr Gladstone passed away. A notable indication of the tendency is found in Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman's friendly message to Lord Dalmeny son and

country well tells me that C.-B. is much more powerful in Midlothian than is Lord Rosebery, and that his active advocacy of Lord Dalmeny means the adhesion of hundreds of votes.

It is to be hoped, in the interests of the country, not less than in those of the party, that this tendency towards reunion and common action will grow and increase. I do not believe there is the slightest chance of its extending in the direction of securing the collaboration of Lord Rosebery in the bring himself to serve under the leadership new Liberal Administration. He cannot

either of Earl Spencer or of Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman, whilst he himself remains impossible as as Premier. But there are ways boyond actual colleague- ship wherein a powerful and popular statesman may help his fricuds in office, and in these there is newly born expectation in well-informed quarters that Lord Rosebery will be found walking, An incentive to revivification of

of spirit in Liberal circles is knowledge of the deter mination of the Front Opposition Bench to put itself in battle array during the coming session. The House of Commons, as to be said in Palmerston's time, likes than who will show it sport.

There has

been precious little sport for the Liberal party under the distraught, divided leader- ship of the last nine years, They are promised something quite different next session, and are backing up accordingly.

This last Greville diary affords another example of the non-inventiveness of his. tory. Many will remember a case whichdur- ing Disraeli's first Administration created DOUBLE FLOORED- SGODOWN; 100 LAND To Let on Primers ROBES, FINE SILK EMBROIDERED June, 1976, the Globe

The Chinese Club Cup will most likely be contested by those ponies which do not start in the Valley Stakes. K.O.8.B. and Sport Royal are two likely looking ponies for this race:

The Lusitano Cup appears to lie between Poel's and Potts' stables. It is difficult to ascertain the starters in this race, for the result of Maiden Stakes will have a large bearing upon it.

The Hongkong Club Cup will most pro- bably be won by Scottish King or Coronet. Rose, though La France Roge will run well. Polka, if not a starlor in the Foo- chow Cup, will be prominent.

The last race of the day is the Encour- agonient Stakes, and it is hopeless to pre- diet starters, much less prominent ponies.

Mr Wood-Mr Chairman and gentlemen, I have much pleasure in seconding the resolution. It is to be regretted that there is such a falling off in the number of vessels docked, thereby reducing the earnings, but I trust that the war, whose course we watch with such painful interest, may soon come to an end and that this Company may share in the revival of trade we may then look for. Meanwhile it is satisfactory to learn that everything is being done to keep the -Docks and the machinery employed about them efficient, and up to the requirements

Anticipations,

The first race to occupy public attention to-morrow is the Wongneichong Stakes, for which there are thirty-five entries. However, the unmber of ponies which will face the starter for that event will be con- siderably less than that. In view of the uncertainty which envelopes the race it is difficult to select likely winners, but I fancy the race will be won by Peel's or Buxey's stable."

The Victoria Stakes will probably be won by either Heather King or Zodiae, although should Coronet Rose run, Heather King and Zodiac would have their work cut out to beat last year's Derby winner.

The Valley Stakos is also very open. Of forty-one entries it is not likely that half will start. The Gem Rose has a very good chance, and Ching, if it, will be very close The cruiser race round the island took up. WILD ORGY ON THE CHESHIRE COAST.

Strange Scenes at the Wreck of a Wine-Laden Steamer,

London, Feb. 3-At the mouth of the Mersey, on the strutch of Cheshire coast 2181 known as the Wallasey Shore, there have been extraordinary scenes during the last for days. Six milos of bench have been strown with the products of the groves and vineyards of Spain-oranges, and citrons, and grapes, and barrola of port. The neighbouring folk have helped themselves freely to all those richos, and many havo drunk the port unwisely and too well until the scono developed into a drunkèn orgy.

About a fortnight ago the, steamer "Ullos," bound for Liverpool from Spain with a cargo of Spanish wines and oranges and various kinds of fruit, went ashore upón one of the many sandbanks in the mouth of the Merscy, about a quarter of a mile from the Wallasey Shore, On Thursday night last a heavy storm arose, and broke up the fore part of the reasol, liberating a largo part of the cargo. The wind blow ashore about 5(0 cases of oranges, and numerous boxes of raisins, tigs, and onions, together with five 100-gallon casks of port wine.

Towards Friday evening the villagers turned out to view the débris left on their ahoro by the receding tide. Many of the cases of fruit had been burst open by the force of the waves and the shore for miles was covered with rich-coloured fruits, the

AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but certain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Lazatine being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messrs 4. S. WATSON & Co. These symptoms, and many more, come from unfiltered blood-blood loaded with impurities that are poisoning every organ.
